ALS Awareness: Haveredition

Donation protected
This summer has seen many renditions of the ice bucket challenge, which as entertaining as it may be, has been raising both money and awareness for a great cause: ALS research. "Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed." (http://www.alsa.org/about-als/) Research on this topic can significantly improve the quality of life of those diagnosed, and that of their families.  Haverford's premier celebrity, President Dan Weiss, has agreed that this issue deserves our attention, and our support.  He has pledged to donate $500 himself AND do the ice bucket challenge on Founder's green, if we as a student body (and maybe with your parents' help too!) can match that $500.  If contributing to a wonderful cause and watching Dan Weiss covered in ice water is not enough incentive, anyone who donates at least $10 will receive home-baked cookies from me, anyone donating at least $50 will receive a basket of home baked goodness.  SO HAVERFORD, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
