Light the Way Suicide Prevention
Its strategic plan was developed under the auspices of the Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention (MCSP).
Death by suicide has managed to crawl its way up from the 11th to the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Among youth ages 10-24, it’s now the 2nd leading cause of death. Most suicides, not all, but most suicides are preventable.
Although it's based in Taunton MA, the BCRCSP serves all 20 communities in Bristol County. Suicide impacts all of us. The mission of the BCRC-SP is to prevent suicide through county-wide advocacy and collaboration. The Light the Way Walk for suicide education, prevention & training & the Light the Way Motorcycle Run are intended to raise the necessary funding to achieve that goal.
Funds raised from the September 9th, 8th Annual Light the Way Walk & Motorcycle Run will be dedicated to the work needed in many forms to prevent suicide within Bristol County.
See the 2014 story: More Than 150 Participate in Taunton Suicide Prevention Walk
In 2015, we had 375 people across the lifespan walk and raise $8,500.00
In 2016, we had 250 people who helped raise $7,000.
After a tragedy like suicide, whether it's a teenager, a parent, an elder or a celebrity, so many sit & wonder, "But what can I do? I want to DO something." You can. Get involved. Make a Difference. Walks do not necessarily save lives, but they raise awareness & they raise funds that can be put to good purpose & that does save lives.
The most important thing we can do to make a difference is be available to educate and train everyone we can to be ready to recognize signs & symptoms in any age group, and then know what to do next. That does cost money.
It was our hope is that this annual project can be a unifying collaborative between all 20 Bristol County communities. So please, get invovled however you can & make a difference. Together we can save lives.

All Walks are 3 miles with a 1 mile option for those who need a shorter route.
TEE SHIRTS: At a planning meeting in May, the committee voted to ask all teams to use the color purple to help create a unified visual from the air – yes, from the air. We have a local pilot willing to photograph the walks throughout Bristol County on September 18th, and having tee shirts all one color will make a visual impact.
Light the Way Tee Shirts: This year, we have Light the Way tee shirts that include your walk registration via Bonfire Funds. They come in a couple of options and there is a youth size. Registering via Bonfire to secure these shirts is time sensitive, so please register ASAP. This option also allows you to add additional pledge funds or donations for your team or the walk in general.
If you prefer your own tee shirts – with a logo, picture, name, etc., we ask only that the shirts also be purple, please – to help keep the “visual” unified.
Free Team Buttons will be available at the sign in tables for Teams who pre-register through Bonfire. Team Captains will let us know what colors, logo, picture, etc. the Team wants. We need this information ASAP to allow for time needed to produce the buttons.
TEAM Fundraising: We encourage teams and individuals to use whatever option works best for them to raise funds. One example is the typical “Pledge Sheet” that can be circulated among family, friends, co-workers, etc. Contact Annemarie Matulis to pick up hard copies or to have a copy sent via email: (508) 922-7278 (call or text) or firstname.lastname@example.org or, teams can follow the example set by Team Kacie (Steve & Kerry Palm) who have established an online version for raising funds pledged specifically to Team Kacie. However, these options do not cover the $10 REGISTRATION fee.
GoFundMe Online Registration, Pledges & Donations: As in years past, you also have the option of registering yourself, a family, registering & donating to a team or in the name of a loved one on GoFundMe.
These options are all tax deductible. The BCRCSP is a program of SEMA-VAV which is a division of the 501c3 non-profit the Greater Taunton Community Services, Inc.
Thank you to all who have made a donation on the go fund me page and also to everybody who has purchased a t-shirt. My family and I really appreciate all of the support. Just a reminder that if you planned on purchasing a t-shirt that you must do so by August 24th so that we have in time for the walk.
