Design Build Movie

Donation protected
Allie Rood Films presents a documentary about Design/ Build.

A story that exemplifies creative action, free thinking, community, design as problem solving, and a fearless sense of possibility for a future that is focused on moving the needle towards better solutions.

WHAT IS DESIGN/ BUILD?

“It’s an interactive process that involves conceiving and executing and experimenting.  You think of something, you try it, it didn’t work, and you try a different way.  It’s the way that art works.  It’s the way good design works.”

Design is about doing something with intention, defining a problem and solving it, and that is an attitude that is going to make it possible to build not just great buildings and inventions, but extraordinary community too.

The point of the movie is to explain and illustrate the importance of design specifically through design/ build.

To reference the famous ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, the architect should focus on three central and intergral themes while designing; firmness (structure), commodity (usefulness; must serve it’s purpose), and delight (beauty).  Architecture, building, solving world agricultural problems, implementing social change and baking a cake all require design.  The film argues that art is essential to the experience of learning and through the Mad River Valley of Vermont’s expression of D/B, I will explain why.

WHY THIS FILM?

I grew up in Warren, VT as the daughter of a design/ build architect.  I have spent the better part of my life explaining Design/ Build and the community I grew up in, and for years I thought about making a documentary about the history of Design/ Build in Vermont.  As a product of my up bringing, I have always lived by the mantra “just do it”, so here we are. There is something truly amazing here, and it’s a story I am confident needs to be told.

The Mad River community has a willingness to experiment and be free thinking towards problem solving and design -- be it architecture, business development, product design, community, education--

It’s an attitude that is truely exceptional – and it’s a message I am passionate about sharing. --- So I’m evolving this, searching for a key to a story.

Just like any design/ build endeavor, I don’t know what the final product looks like.  But I’m guiding it, and am confident in the rich story which is emerging.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT MEANS TO THIS PROJECT?

Last year I started this project as a labor of love, mostly interested in documenting and sharing the Prickly Mountain story.  Quickly I discovered that the project is large and complex, and demands the attention of a serious and fully executed documentary.  With a finish goal of Spring 2019, I am still in the beginning stages of this film.  Your contribution will help support expenses associated with production costs to create a comprehensive trailer leading to a 60- 90 minute final movie.

May, June and July 2017 has served as the beginning and most formative production stage for this film.  I have interviewed practitioners and community members who are integral parts of this story, shot vignettes of classes at Yestermorrow Design/ Build School in Warren VT, documented Dave Sellers’ Home Run House as a current D/B project going on at Prickly Mountain, collected archival footage, and will shoot the entire 4th of July float building process.  With this library, I will take the remainder of the summer and fall to begin organizing and putting together a trailer.

Your support is imperative for the most critical stage of the film, which is right now!

Please, Please, Please, email me with any questions you might have, and spread the word.  A budget report and calendar of events is available upon request, and more information regarding updates and film progress will be posted on the Facebook page, my website www.allierood.com, as well as right here at www.gofundme.com/d-b-movie!
