Assist Cynthia with her ALS Challenge

Many of you may already know that Cynthia, my sister, was diagnosed with sporadic (non-inherited) ALS in April 2019. Click here for very detailed info on this disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS - also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a terribly devastating degenerative neuromuscular disease with no known cure. Approximately 80% of people with ALS die within 2-5 years of being diagnosed. Some will live 10 years or longer (Stephen Hawking for example, but he was a very rare case). The average cost of ALS to a Canadian family is $150,000 to $250,000.
Those close to Cynthia know that she is a strong and determined woman. She refuses to simply give in to this dreadful disease. Cynthia and her community of family & friends have been researching ways to hopefully extend the limited time that she has remaining and increase her quality of life during the upcoming difficult battle with ALS. One of Cynthia’s biggest concerns is the future of her two sons. They are both students at the University of Victoria, and moved back home soon after her diagnosis to be closer to their Mom.
Cynthia had to stop working at her job that she was passionate about, as an Island Health Pharmacist. The financial stresses that Cynthia's family will be burdened with are beyond their resources, hence this GoFundMe page. From what we understand, her family can expect to incur unanticipated costs over and above the following:
o wheelchair accessible entrance and interior of house
o washroom and shower upgrades
o bedroom upgrades
o uncovered medical expenses
o future caregiver expenses
o trips to visit medical professionals in Vancouver and the US
o end of life planning
We are asking for your help to support Cynthia and her family through their struggle with ALS. We have set the fundraising goal to $1 since the needs of each person battling ALS are quite varied and unknown. Any amount would be appreciated, and if you cannot donate at this time, maybe you could share this with others in your circle of friends.
