School for Mozambican’s children | Cyclone Idai

On March 15th, Tropical Cyclone Idai struck Mozambique and its neighbours Malawi and Zimbabwe. It was recorded as being one of the worst tropical cyclones to hit Africa. Idai has not only destroyed 90% of the city of Beira but devastated thousands of villages mainland, including the village of Metuchira.
In Mutichira, the river that divides the village is currently stable. Aid is in the process of being organized and will be sent along with basic necessities such as water sanitation tablets, non-perishable food, clothes, blankets and medical supplies.
After a few days of national mourning, Mozambican students will return to their school, leaving Metuchira’s children with no school to attend. Idai has left two empty buildings waiting for their students. Our mission is to ensure that children will have access to schooling, enabling them to keep up with the academic calendar.
WHERE IS THE SCHOOL OF METUCHIRA?
The school of Metuchira is located in the Nhamatanda district of the Sofala Province. The nearest towns are Chimoio, which is situated 75km inland to the west, and the port of Beira situated 60km east on the Indian Ocean coastline. The school represents the only access to basic schooling for Metuchira’s children.
HOW WILL THE MONEY BE USED?
Our primary objective is to make sure that the money that is raised will enable the school to rebuild these two buildings (if there is any additional money, it will be used after assessing the needs with the director of the school). Even before Idai, the lack of resources was enormous. The school is rudimentary and cannot cater for the excessive numbers of students that attend (demand > supply). Children often learn under trees, sharing desks or sitting on the floor because classrooms are run down and incredibly hot making it a difficult environment to teach and learn.
WHO WILL MANAGE THIS PROJECT IN MUTICHIRA?
Camille Trollope will be in charge of coordinating the efforts to reach our primary objective with members of the school. For almost two years, she collaborated with the school on an agroforestry project which led to fixing the school’s water pump and cultivating just under a hectare of fruits and vegetables, now destroyed by Idai, which were then sold via the school to residents.

HOW WILL THE MONEY REACH MOZAMBIQUE?
We are currently evaluating the best way to transfer funds to Mozambique in order to minimize transfer fees. All the supplies needed will be purchased in Mozambique in order to support the local economy, and will then be transported to the school in Metuchira.
WHO ARE WE?
Camille and Alex met five years ago while attending Bishop’s University in Canada. They are firm believers that education is the most important tool that a child can have. Last July, Alex visited Camille in Metuchira and they are now working together to make this project a reality. The focus is centered on collaboration with members of the community as well as long term sustainability, focusing specifically on the fundamental role that education plays in a young person’s life.

Après quelques jours de deuil national, les étudiants mozambicains retourneront à leur école, laissant les enfants de Metuchira sans école. Idai a détruit deux bâtiments sur son passage. Notre mission est de veiller à ce que les enfants aient accès à la scolarité, ce qui leur permettra de suivre le calendrier scolaire.

Notre objectif principal est de nous assurer que l'argent recueilli permettra au moins à l'école de reconstruire les deux bâtiments détruits par Idai (s'il y a de l'argent supplémentaire, cela sera utilisé après avoir évalué les besoins avec le directeur de l'école). Même avant Idai, le manque de ressources était énorme. L'école est rudimentaire et ne peut pas prendre en charge le nombre excessif d'élèves qui fréquentent l'école (demande > offre). Les enfants apprennent souvent sous les arbres, partageant des bureaux ou assis par terre parce que les salles de classe sont extrêmement délabrées et incroyablement inconfortable à cause de la chaleur ce qui rend l'environnement difficile à enseigner et à apprendre.
QUI GÉRERA CE PROJET À METUCHIRA ?
Camille Trollope sera chargée de coordonner les efforts pour atteindre notre objectif principal avec les professionnels de l’école. Pendant près de deux ans, elle a collaboré avec l’école sur un projet d’agroforesterie qui a permis de réparer la pompe à eau et de cultiver un peu moins d’un hectare de fruits et légumes qui ont ensuite été vendus aux villageois par l’intermédiaire de l’école.

Ce projet est avant tout baser sur la collaboration avec les membres de la communauté ainsi que sur sa durabilité, en particulier sur le rôle fondamental que l’éducation joue dans la vie des jeunes.
