New Custer Telescope

Donation protected
Custer Observatory is the largest Astronomical Observatory on Long Island.  It was founded in the 1920's and the current building was built in the 1930's . Over the following years it grew to be a very special place where people interested in science and astronomy could gather, discusss and view the universe.

The original wooden dome built by local ship builders  finally succumbed to the elements and was replaced by a more modern metal dome 10 years ago.

The original Telescope and Mount are over 100 years old and are desperately in need of replacement, We currently have a temporary telescope in the dome until we raise enough funds to purchase a suitable replacement.

A new telescope and mounting will cost between $25,000 and $75,000 depending upon funds raised.

Custer Observatory is open to the public every Saturday night and we host more than a hundred people many clear nights.  This new telescope will be used by thousands of people every year including, locals, tourists, school groups, college students, astronomers and more.

We are hoping to purchase our new telescope and mount by the end of the year.

Your support will mean so much to Custer and a list including all donors will be placed on our website.
