Cure Carin's Cancer

Donation protected
Carin is fighting for her life.  For all of 2019 she will battle against nodular, sclerosing Hodgkin lymphoma.  With your help, Carin can win.  Please help our wonderful mother, daughter, sister, friend and nurse.

In thanks to those of you moved to donate, I will match every dollar donated to Carin's Cause!

Here's her story:

Carin is a single mom who is devoted to her twenty three year old son, Matthew who has intellectual disabilities. She has fought tirelessly, since his birth, to give him the best life possible, often putting her own needs aside.

Here is Matthew’s plea for assistance for his mother, “Please help my mom raise money because it’s expensive and I’m worried we’re going to lose our house. My mom hasn’t been able to work as much. Sometimes, I’m so scared.  Not only does my mom have cancer, but my dad just got diagnosed with prostate cancer. I’m worried I’m going to lose both my parents.  Please donate whatever you can. And please share this on all your social media. “

On August 26th, 2018, Matthew found himself being called to help fight for his mother’s life.  He heard a “thump” and found his mom passed out on the kitchen floor.  When she regained consciousness, she found she couldn’t get up and couldn’t catch her breath.   She also found that her son had called 911, an act that she is forever grateful for.

Within 24 hours of admission a mass was found behind her sternum. She had to stay in the hospital for a week, because they needed to to shrink the clots and due to the cardiac ischemia caused by the clots.  She spent another 2 weeks at home regaining her strength again. Her heart is now functioning normally.

The doctors were sure that Carin had some form of cancer that had also caused her blood clots, yet they were unsure as to what kind.    For three months, she made multiple trips to doctors in Maine and Boston.  She underwent 3 surgical procedures.  Because the cancerous masses was tucked in behind her sternum, intertwined with her heart and blood vessels the procedures were complex and invasive. Her last procedure on November 30th,  yielded a definitive biopsy definitive for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, the sclerosing nodular type.

Carin’s treatment will consist of six months of ABVD chemotherapy. Radiation isn’t an option due to the proximity of the involved nodes/mass to her heart and blood vessels. Radiation would put her at high risk for heart failure.

She was told, by her doctors, that once chemotherapy ends, she will continue to suffer from severe fatigue for another six months, improving with each new day.  It takes one year to recover from the treatments.

On top of this Carin has medical conditions that will make the chemotherapy more challenging as the medications she’ll be taking has to be on also affects  the liver. Her type of chemotherapy can cause damage to the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys,  affecting every cell in the  her body. She will need treatments that are not covered by insurance in order to help her counter the negative chemotherapy effects.

Carin has already missed six weeks of work and chemotherapy hasn’t even started yet!  The financial strain is interfering with her ability to focus on getting better. All monies donated will go towards paying her health insurance premiums, copay's, co-insurance, medical bills not covered by insurance (or have higher costs due to being “out-of-network”).  It will also help cover heating oil costs or other household necessities if she is unable to work to her full capacity.

And, as Matthew mentioned earlier, his father was diagnosed with aggressive, non-metastasized prostate cancer in October.  Before he got his diagnosis, he was able to fly up from Florida where he now lives, to help out with Matthew and lend support. The loss of his support is very hard. He has his own battles to fight now. Any monies left over will go to help his father. If there are monies left over after that, they will be donated to another person suffering from Lymphoma.  Carin and her family thank you in advance for anything that you can contribute.
