CU young man and family in need

Today I was informed of a very stressful and sad situation. A young man whom I know from a previous time, came into our office as a last resort for help. This young man is 25 years old, he was living with his girlfriend and their 2 year old both working part-time jobs living in a small 1 bedroom hotel. His world was turned upside down when 2 weeks ago he received a call from a family member living in Wisconsin telling him that he needed to come get his five siblings ages 2, 5, 14, 15, and 17, his mother signed over partial custody to the family member. Prior to living with this family member the siblings had been living all over the place, at random friend's houses and in a car. His mother left the kids due to issues of her own.

Fast forward to the current situation, there are 8 people living in a one bedroom hotel room with a small kitchenette in Champaign. The sleeping conditions are obviously not ideal and to make the situation worse the hotel will not provide them more blankets or pillows.

This young man is very sweet and hardworking, when he came in he was only looking for resources in the community to help his siblings, and not a handout. I am the one that asked if he needed some extra items. The first thing he asked for were blankets and pillows and then some clothes for his siblings.

He is attempting to now potty train both 2 year olds, however they're still in diapers for the time being. He is at the laundry-mat daily as they don't have enough clothes to keep up. He just paid another week of rent to the hotel, but he's struggling financially, emotionally, and mentally. Also, the 17 year old has now obtained employment part-time and is helping with rent, food etc.

We gave him info on how to get link, medical card, etc. which does not take effect right away. We also gave him flyers for food pantries, crisis nursery, etc. Due to only having partial custody and not full custody im not sure if he can even receive the benefits for the kids.

My plea to the community is for a young man who has had everything thrown at him at one time through no fault of his own. The money donated will go toward housing, basic necessities, and once he obtains housing household items such as cleaning supplies, garbage cans, detergent, hygiene supplies, kitchen supplies, etc. He needs help to get on his feet and to help his siblings to live a normal life with basic necessities.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart and his. ❤️
