Winning Wilbur

Donation protected
UPDATE: We are currently in negotiations with the principal of the school to offer a more compassionate and humane alternative in exchange for the pig's life.
Let it be clear that we are not here to chastise anybody, tear anyone down, stop any fundraising, or stop people from eating meat. That is not at all my intention. I FULLY support the school and the girls that are raising money and want to do anything I can to help them succeed. My greatest goal here, is to educate-- to show them that pigs are compassionate animals and that they deserve a fair chance at life. I hope that the school is able to see that and we are able to come up with a compromise that makes everyone happy.

With that being said-- Any additional money, after negotiations with the school, will help us transport the pig to their new home and then go home with 'Wilbur' to help support his/her ever-growing appetitie and the precious family that will give him a forever home. However, if this story and page does continue to grow at such a rapid rate and we are able to raise an extensive amount of money, my aunt and I will absolutely start ground-breaking for a pig sanctuary in or around Athens, GA.

Thank you everyone for your continuing support and compassion. I am just absolutely blown away everytime I receive a donation or kind words from an absolute stranger. We raised over $1,000 (original goal) in less than 48 hours.

Until we win,
Katie Corbett
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello, everyone! Some background for those of you that don't know who I am...

My name is Katie Corbett and I am a 23 year old college student living in Athens, GA. I have recently, in the last couple years, become a vegetarian and interested in animal activism and rights thanks a lot in part to my aunt, Susie Lundie. She got a Vietnamese potbellied pig as a pet several years ago and we have been in love ever since. We have had several of these sweet animals in our family since: Ruthie is still with us, Sherman has come and passed, Ulysses joined our family several months ago, and Lassiter is the newest foster pig she has now.

Anyways, I digress... There is a woman that I work with here in Athens, whose girls are cheerleaders at Jefferson County Schools a little ways a way from us. I found out about the fundraiser that they are doing this year and I am just absolutely appalled and disgusted. Someone has donated a 100 pound pig while someone else has donated the services to slaughter the pig and turn him/her into edible product. For $1, you can buy a raffle ticket to "win" the pig. Using the word "win" over an animal... I just have no words... No compassionate creature should ever be "won".

I have asked that if I should win the raffle, if the pig could live, and they have agreed. The raffle is over on August 27th and the "winner" is announced on the 29th. Talking with my friend about how many girls there are in the cheer-leading squad and how many tickets they expect to sell, I hope to raise about $1,000 and would think that I would have a pretty good chance. It's still not a guarantee, I realize that, but I just could not live with myself if I just sat back and watched this happen. I have rallied some support with family and friends, but nothing that I think will actually make a difference. I guess bluntly... I am just looking for some help, some support, something that lets me know that I'm doing the right thing.

Thank you for your consideration!
Love and adore you all always,
Katie Corbett
