CSL Students' Living Expenses

Donation protected
My name is Scott Sigman.  My students call me Professor Sigman, although I imagine the names they have for me are more colorful when I'm not around.  Nonetheless, I am privileged to provide instruction to some wonderful students at the Charlotte School of Law (CSL).  Lately, the outside world has become acquainted with CSL students (both past and present) in a generalized, faceless way.  That is not how I and my colleagues know them.  We know their potential, their aspiration, their challenges, and their successes.  And when you know them as we do, you care about them deeply.

Recently, however, current CSL students have been placed in a terrible bind.  They are attempting to complete law school without financial aid funds that they need for living expenses like rent, food, gas, utilities, and medical expenses.  Some really deserving and hard-working students have only a semester or two to go before they graduate.  But, they can't finish without being able to pay for the bare necessities.  Let me be clear: any money raised here will be used to assist registered CSL students with those basic necessities, not tuition.

I want to help them.  I can't imagine how I would have succeeded in law school in the circumstances that CSL students face.  Plenty of arguments exist out there about the genesis of the circumstances and the loss of financial aid for these students, but this is not the space for that conversation.  This is the place to recognize that there are hard-working, deserving students who should be able to finish what they started.  They simply need some assistance right now to do so.

Here is how this will work:

1.  Raise money exclusively for registered CSL students' living expenses to include rent, utilities, food, gas, and medical expenses through your generous donations.
2.  Divide the total amount of money raised by the number of registered CSL students on February 3, 2017.
3.  Give each student an equal distribution of the funds once they sign an agreement that those funds will be used only for expenses mentioned in No. 1 above.
4.  To the extent that some students do not need the assistance contemplated here and, thus, affirmatively opt out, their funds will be redistributed in equal share to those students who do need it.

I hope you will join me in helping them.  I can't tell you how much I would appreciate any amount you're willing to contribute.

Warmly,

Professor Sigman (or some other colorful term of your choice)
