Fabi’s Breast Cancer Crusade
Fabi's Breast Cancer Crusade is an opportunity to support and give back to a very special person who helps so many others and could now a use a bit of kindness herself. On May 1, 2018, Fabi was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma breast cancer.
Why a crusade? Because the definition of crusade is “to lead or take part in an energetic and organized campaign concerning a social, political, or religious issue.” Yup, that’s us!
Fabi’s Life of Giving
A recent graduate from the recreation therapy program at Douglas College, Fabi is one of those rare people who always puts others before herself. She always finds the time to give back, be it volunteering at a local cat rescue organization and SPCA, co-chairing a student learn-to-knit group, sitting on her building’s strata council or organizing potluck dinners for friends. Fabi is that one friend you can call on for help anytime, day or night, and she’ll come running, no questions asked.
Fabi’s Cancer Crusade Plan of Attack
As you can imagine, Fabi’s life has changed considerably since May 1st. She has already had two surgeries and is currently undergoing bi-weekly chemotherapy until late October 2018. Then the plan is targeted radiation before wrapping everything up with hormone therapy, as her breast cancer is known to be sensitive to estrogen. Her oncologist has also suggested that somewhere between chemotherapy and radiation, she may need more surgery. She is now an expert in juggling multiple medical appointments, including bi-weekly lab and oncologist appointments on top of her chemotherapy.
Why Fabi Needs Crusaders Like You for Support
Fabi’s oncologist has recommended she not work during treatment as chemotherapy will significantly reduce the ability of her immune system to fight off infection and will bring some not so nice side effects, including fatigue. Fabi doesn’t have extended benefits through work and so until she completes her full course of treatment in early 2019, she will need to find other ways to cover her living expenses as well as a mortgage, car insurance, student loans and caring for her two rescue cats, Maxwell and Roger.
