Cow Rescue Hawaii by HLFARN

Aloha,

As  many of you already may know, a big-scale dairy farm on Hawaii Island is shutting down within a month. This means we have a month to save as many cows as we possibly can from slaughter. About 2800 female cows of various ages will be heading to slaughter soon. All of them are for sale at the moment. We will try to buy as many as possible to save their precious lives.

It isn’t very often that we have the chance to actually snatch a life from the road to the slaughterhouse and divert them to a life of tranquility. Please join us in this opportunity to really make a difference.

This will, once again, be a huge community effort.

In addition to help from volunteers on the Big Island, we are in desperate need of funds to purchase the cows and to move them to their new, loving homes. Along with the purchase price of the cows and calves ($250  for calves, $375 for milking cows), we will need to help pay for gas for transportation, vet care, medications, and fencing assistance for some of the new homes.

At the moment we have homes for approximately 30 cows lined up. There are calves and milk cows who need to be saved. Ideally we would like to place a Mama and a Baby together (about $450) -- calves will be the first killed if we can’t home them.

We will only assist with helping to place cows who will live their precious lives out until their natural end. We do not support any of them being slaughtered or used for profit. All of them will be sent into retirement and Sanctuary. Your donations will only be used to save these lives, not to perpetuate their suffering.

Let’s do this friends, let’s help these gentle beauties - let’s save their lives.

The Hawaii Lava Flow Animal Rescue Network, a Facebook group that was started due to the emergency of the 2018 Lava Flow on Hawaii Island, is in the process of becoming a non profit. The group is currently fiscally sponsored by the Sanctuary of Mana Ke`a Gardens, a 501 (c) 3.

UPDATE --- Sunday, January 20, 2019:

As the rescued baby girls are settling in and the last ones of Rescue #1 find their forever homes in the coming days, we are slowly but surely getting ready for Rescue #2. As you know, the decisions to be made are heartbreaking, one way or another. There are still about 2000 beautiful innocent sentient beings at the Dairy and most of them will most likely head to slaughter. We want to save all of them but the reality is, if no one steps up with huge acreage of land and also financial resources, we, meaning this group, can’t.

Several people inquire about mamas with babies and a little older cows who graze already. We want to focus on both groups as well, but want to wait a bit, since there are still many young ones that need to get out of there, babies; these ones out of crates, nevertheless confined. No sun, no grass, just in a larger pen. Not much older than the bottle babies, still easily domesticated and made into a family member, their spirits not yet broken. Besides, they cost less, so we can get a few more out. I know, devastating decisions. We would like to get at least some of these babies - 6 months and older - out next. In order to do this, we need good, reliable homes. Fencing, good grass, knowledge, funds and commitment a must, these girls can reach 20 years of age and need to be taken care of.

If you are willing to help a pair, agree to not use them for meat or milk, please send us an email to:

We don’t have much time.
But we do need reliable homes, if not we will end in chaos. And we need funds.
Please share if you feel like helping.
Mahalo.
