Survivors: Courtney and Her Twins

You would never guess that I met Courtney over 5 years ago while she held infant twin boys, one in each arm, as she completed intake paperwork at the emergency domestic violence shelter I managed.  She is the EPITOME of a survivor and shows the resiliency one has when they intentionally make the decision to never give up.

In 2002....the EXACT SAME YEAR AS ME....Courtney was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.   When she crashed, she crashed hard, and spent many years suffering from her illness and the effects of an abusive relationship in total and complete silence.  She battled with suicide attempts, she self medicated, was fired from jobs, left abandoned by loved ones, and was often barely able to get out of bed.  BUT SHE DID.  She got out of bed and put one foot in front of the other for her two beautiful babies.  They need their mother.  And SHE NEEDS US.

Bipolar disorder is rearing it's ugly head, and she is struggling greatly to find medication that keeps the rapid cycling in check, and lessens her depression and anxiety from taking over.  Her current mental and physical health status has made it so that she cannot work. Rather than giving up...she has found ways to work from home, sell beauty products, and design clothing items and crafts to sell.  She REFUSES to fail, and will do anything to support Sammy and Jayson.

After 4 years with no car, and no money, she walked, took the bus and begged for rides so she could get her and her kids to doctors appt and case managers visits. She has worked her way through 9 weeks in a domestic violence shelter, and she successfully completed a transitional housing program for survivors of domestic violence.  She is now in a section 8 apartment that she loves and is proud to call home.

With tears in her eyes, and tears in mine, she came to my speaking event about my own mental illness in Flagstaff a few months back.  We owe it to our community to take care of each other, and I strongly believe that with the incredibly difficult hand of cards Courtney was dealt....she could use a little extra support. For once, SHE should be honored and validated that her fight for life and drive for peace and stability is what she and her boys deserve.  Let's help give them that!!!

My boyfriend Kyle Cook came home last week and said that we should do something to make an impact in somebody's life.  He talked about the many ways in which we spend $20 here, and $30 there....never realizing the life changing value this might carry for someone who is struggling. I immediately thought of Courtney, Sammy, and Jayson.  So Kyle and I are asking you to help this beautiful family in any way you can!!!

Courtney shared that the boys constantly need new shoes and clothes.  She could use help getting ahead of the winter heating bills and have the gas bill caught up before the cold weather starts (she lives in Flagstaff.)
Just this year, Courtney was finally able to purchase a car, so her other expenses include gas and minor repairs.

Anything you can offer will mean a great deal to this family!  She is absolutely honored and grateful that people would offer their kindness....so let's show her how much we care about lending a hand and giving back to an incredible SURVIVOR OF LIFE.
