my name is Courtney Manning i live in coolock in dublin ireland im 18 years old and I was 10 weeks premature and was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy I'm known as a "toe walker "
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder that affects muscle tone, movement, and motor skills (the ability to move in a coordinated and purposeful way).
CP usually is caused by brain damage that happens before or during a baby's birth, or during the first 3 to 5 years of a child's life. This brain damage also can lead to other health issues, including vision, hearing, and speech problems; and learning disabilities.
I couldn't walk until I was 3 but with the help of mam and her determination I finally took my first steps I attend the C.R.C for weekly physiotherapy and occupational therapy appointments i also see my surgeon and doctor there too
For years on end I've never had any operations botox or AFOS(splints ) I was always 'too good ' but in September of 2014 I had my first round of Botox and casting which it failed so it was into surgery next
On the 10th of March 2016 I had my first major operation my right Achilles' tendons lengthened which has done its job but has unfortunately gave me lots of complications since the op my condition has worsened since then and we can see my mobility decreasing this has caused me a lot of pain daily and sleepless nights most of my nights are spent up crying with the pains and muscle spasms at a recent appointment during the week I was told the spasticity (tightness) is taking over my legs so this is urging us to get to St. Louis sooner then later
I have recently had a wish and this is to be pain free and I have just been accepted for for surgery in St. Louis in America it's known as SDR (selective dorsal rhizotomy)
Over the next few months I will be doing alot of fundraising to get to America so any ideas or help would be great ☘
my whole life is going to change and most importantly i would be pain free i would be like all my friends getting to wear high heels on a nigt out and be back running around playing GAA again and get bak to dancing ive had to stop both of my hobbies over my cp which makes me upset that i cant do what all my friends are doing
when im in st louis i will be having SDR surgery along with hamstring and heel chord surgery (PERCS) so i will be having 2 in total my rehab is going to be hard but i can't wait to be able to do hat any other child can do but most importantly i will be pain free
