My name is Melissa Grogan. I live in Austin, Texas. I am volunteering with two local organizations who are running a relief and recovery effort for people in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Counter Balance: ATX and Guardians Gate is working hard and NEEDS YOUR HELP! These are Austin based, grassroots organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for impoverished self-identifying women and impoverished women of the global majority through policy, community-based programs, and resources.

We are working hard, 24/7, to get aid, resources, rescues, and comfortable care and shelter to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Currently, we are focused on helping people stranded in Port Arthur, Texas from the devastation due to the hurricane.

There are 200+ people stranded in Port Arthur without blankets, food or water. Their plumbing began to fail this morning (9/1). Many have medical needs and there is no care in sight. We are organizing to get buses and trucks to get the people there and transport them to Austin, Texas where we have a comfortable, welcoming relocation center waiting for them complete with a healing station, nursing room, sanctuary, food, and toiletries. From there, they will have temporary housing in hotels in the area.

We are wanting to help these people who are cold, scared, hungry, and stranded and help them feel loved, safe, and relieved.

It is our goal to let people know that Austin is a place where all are welcome regardless of their color of skin, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

Our next level of effort has already started. We are working on the coast, in Port Arthur, Beaumont, Orange County to help with the clean-up effort. We will then begin to help them rebuild their homes.
