The S.T.A.R. Foundation of Monterey County has granted over one million dollars to youth-related performing arts. We would like to have a more permanent, long-lasting effect by purchasing a building to house a costume co-op to help all theaters and schools in the county.
There is definitely a need. Some theaters store their costumes and props in rat-infested, non-climate controlled spaces and various garages. The costume co-op would help theaters and schools catalog, store and maintain inventory. Designers could create, and area students could even spend their volunteer time helping to maintain costumes. This would not only give a safe location for storage but also could allow groups to rent or borrow from each other depending on the arrangement. Executive Director Reg Huston met with area groups and the S.T.A.R. is putting into motion some of these ideas. The most important factor is finding a space.

S.T.A.R. is looking for funding to purchase the building or to cover the lease for at least ten years or better yet to purchase a site which consisting of at least 4000 sq feet.

It will use current funds  to equip the costume space with washers, dryers, racks, sewing machines, shelving, etc. This would be a safe place to create and maintain costumes. Ideally there will be a space dedicated for each theater/school to keep their inventory and someone to coordinate it. This idea also includes an educational component for area students to volunteer or even apprentice. There is possible synergy between the groups for rental or borrowing of costumes.

About the foundation:
MISSION: To foster cultural understanding through the enrichment and development of youth-related performing arts programs throughout Monterey County, California.

S.T.A.R. Foundation of Monterey County (Support The Arts Regionally) was founded in 2009 to support youth-related theatrical arts throughout Monterey County. In the fall of 2013 it changed focus to include youth-related performing arts. Studies show that participation in, and expression through, the arts helps to develop a young person’s thinking skills and and social interactions. As the student’s awareness of his own identity and his environment are explored, his understanding of the world around him deepens. It is S.T.A.R. Foundation’s hope to better society by providing the stage whereby personal discovery can occur. Educational programs can be a vital vehicle for this growth. But, often times, the financial support for the continuity of these programs is either insufficient or not forthcoming. S.T.A.R. Foundation provides needed funding for the enrichment of arts programs currently existing in our schools and community organizations, and assists in developing new youth programs where there are none. It is the belief of the Board of Directors of S.T.A.R. Foundation that the power of self-discovery and identity is the key to cooperative societal interaction. Participation through positive multi-cultural performing arts programs is an important aspect in understanding all people and all ethnicities
