Fashion and Costume Arts (Apprenticeship)

Donation protected
I am a self-taught intermediate costume and fashion designer and sewer and I have a long ways to go still. I could use help with funding so I can continue to further increase my abilities and skills to obtain work in my dream field. I potentially have the chance to work for the Shakespeare Festival here in Utah under an apprenticeship or temporary seasonal work. So far I have helped out in the costume department on volunteer work for a minimum of 10 hours while I was visiting back in May of 2019. I have some connections to the festival I've had the chance to meet many of the personnel down there which helps give me a foot hold.

I would feel more confident applying for this job if I had higher quality examples of my work but with my lack of funding this has been a slow process for me to get to the point that I am at now. I want to be able to show them my ability to effectively use expensive and hard to work with fabrics. That I have the ability to work with tools outside of sewing like shop tools, to be methodical in my work as well as work with many different types of materials like wonderflex and epoxy, to name a couple. My end goal is to show them I can also  flexible, adapt to the occasion, and that I am a quick learner with any discipline or new task.

I am hoping that this will open the door for me to have a job as well as potentially unlock access to further education for that job. Since the job doesn't require a degree but helps to do so I feel I have a high chance of making it in. If I do not succeed in obtaining work with them, there are always other places or other opportunities to try out. School is not out of the picture, it just isn't currently feasible and who knows maybe one day I can open up a small etsy shop or a custom costume bridal shop?

I chose this platform instead of Kickstarter because of where I am at currently in life and because I am not able to give back a material product to every investor like those who use Kickstarter. I am rather low income and have been in poverty my whole life despite working hard (two jobs in some cases) and I have noticed those that use Kickstarter usually have some funding already in play and are able to give away freebies which I am not able to do.

The funds will be used to buy tools, supplies, fabric, or other materials that I do not have and desperately need in order to do my work inside and outside of my job. I plan on giving back in some small ways or where ever I can as a way to show good faith and any physical fabric donations that do not meet a fashion fabric requirements, like certain types of flannels and cottons will be used to make quilts for Project Linus or other community resource projects. I plan on releasing tutorials and pictures for those interested in learning things like this as a way to give back as well.

Also to be completely up front and transparent with you, quite a few supporters of mine have encouraged me to sell or auction some of what I make in order to help me obtain the tools that I need quicker. So in essence I will be making and investment by using the funds here not only to help build my resume pieces, but since the platform's goal is to obtain tools, the idea is to further increase what has been given to me to achieve my tool goals faster.

We plan on making arrangements to move down to Cedar City within the next couple of years. This will give me time to pull resources together as well as create my resume pieces for the job. I would like to have funds put together before the year is out so that I can get to work on them as soon as possible but if I can't make this platform work for me, I will do the best I can piece meal my project out of pocket too.

It would mean a lot to me to be able to get this job because I would be able to contribute to the creative arts in Cedar City, Utah in turn bettering our local community. The arts encourage our youth to stay out of drugs and alcohol, to be creative, learn, grow, communicate, and inspire people to be their best through the moral teachings of story telling in theater. It engages our youth and many others to feel welcome and to be a part of something bigger. The city takes pride in it's community because of this and hopefully my work will inspire people to keep trying despite where they are in life. The arts program in this city is taken seriously and the community strives to be its best in everything and I would like to be a part of that somehow.

Funding this project means you will be doing more than helping someone rise out of poverty and with the help of supporters in combination with my own hard work and ambition I will also gain new life skills, learn management techniques, learn to work under pressure, deadlines, and with others. Having this job will help me realize my dream to work as a costume designer as well as provide an example for my son that anyone can do anything they want if they work hard enough for it.

Thank you for reading and if you can't support me monetarily, you can help support in other ways by sharing my project or following my on my other platform!

Disclaimer: Not everything project wise I create that is posted to this platform was made using funds from Gofundme. A lot of what I will be posting are things I have already made, will be making, or will be made from things I already have on hand (own) or have bought. I am choosing to share things here in order to boost my campaign and build my resume.

*List may be subject to change because these are only rounded estimates and vendor prices are subject to change. What is below is only part of what I need. I plan on posting a more comprehensive list at another time.

People often ask me how I am able to plan so well for projects and I tell them I plan for what I think I need based on what I am doing after research and that we can't be perfect. I have to sometimes add in unexpected things or have to change direction. Good planning comes from a willingness to learn from mistakes, to research as effectively as you can, and to be willing to take advice from others or be open with short comings.

Other Project Supplies:

New Computer: $2000.00 (I'm looking at one Dell that I will be able to start using for high end graphics and drawing programs. My 15 year old tablet should still be fine and adapt.)
Scanner: $300.00 (Looking at one on Amazon for high end art scanning. For my portfolio work.)
Colored Pencils: $200.00 (Will be used for costume and fashion sketching as well as help me out with commission work so that I can further invest into this project or give gift art to donors. Higher quality pencils are expensive but they are archival which means they last to the test of time and have better color saturation.)

Update: I'm going to be checking out a program from a nearby college that has cheaper online courses through BYU Pathways. I was attending SLCC but I can't afford to travel to school.  :( I managed to get a year down with no debt though! <3 (Careful Planning!!!)
