Widowed Mom of 5 Kids Needs Help

Donation protected
I’m Melanie Weiss Yambao and I am raising money for the Coreas family for my 30th birthday.

I met the Coreas family through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles. Alia, their loving mother, has been on her own since her husband’s passing in 2010. She has 5 kids, Leila (9), Zeina (10), Maya (11), Aliyah (13), and Meka (14). Through my bi-weekly hangouts with Leila and Zeina, I’ve grown to know and love this family. We’ve done everything from bowling to visiting Disneyland and local museums. We talk about how much they love school and their dreams for future, including college and becoming President of the United States.

In May 2017, the Coreas family was evicted from their home. Since then, they’ve had to move from motel to motel. Oftentimes, Alia can only afford one room for six people. Unable to secure a job, she has been living with depression and untreated health issues. Her social security survivor benefits go directly towards her children and motel expenses.

Alia has never asked me for money. She is doing everything she can to save and find a job, but as a single parent to five kids, she’s struggling to make things work.

In lieu of a birthday present, please donate to the Coreas family through this GoFundMe page.

I believe that no child should have to worry about where they will sleep tomorrow. The Coreas children have the potential to do wonderful things with their lives and they deserve to have a place they can call home; a place where they feel safe and secure.

As of this posting, the Coreas family is waiting to hear back from a potential landlord about whether they are approved for an apartment. If approved, the money raised will go towards their upfront moving costs and daily living expenses. If not approved, we will use the money to help them work with local housing services to find a more permanent solution. We are also in the process of working with local organizations, such as Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, to help fight her wrongful eviction. Our work will not end until they have a place they can call home.

Thank you for helping the Coreas family and for making my 30th birthday a special one.
