Coopers Crusade

Jane Cooper is many things to many people, but all those who know her would describe her as a fighter and an inspiration. Over the last 10 years Jane has been forced to face and overcome many difficult battles that most of us can’t imagine or fathom. This is her battle story, and this page is our opportunity to stand by her as she suits up for her latest crusade.

In 2009, at the age of 40, Jane was first diagnosed with a synovial sarcoma, which is a soft tissue cancerous tumour, in her left arm. After a bout of radiation she became cancer free and in remission for a few years. Sadly, in February of 2012, her husband John was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bowel cancer that took his life on May 31st, 2012, only a month after they officially were married.

Jane and John grew up in England but had always had a dream of coming to Canada together and so, after John lost his battle with cancer Jane packed up her belonging and did just that. She was motivated to fulfil their dream and overcome her tragic loss and so she found her inner strength once again and moved to another continent, alone, unsure of what to do next, but ready to face it head on.

In January 2013 Jane arrived in Canada and chose to take the challenges of her past and use them to build a future here.  She moved to Hamilton and began her journey by going back to school to obtain a Business Diploma from Mohawk College. After 2 years of school, part-time jobs like volunteer coordinator at TIFF or bartending at the college pub, and making a new friends including the man she would soon fall in love with Chris, and his beautiful daughter Mikayla, she proudly graduated in June of 2015.  In 2016,  Jane joined the team at Core Entertainment as an Event Services and Security Manager which would set her on her current career path where she is now in a supervisory role. She had created a new life for herself in Canada just as she set out to do.

However, her time on the battlefield was only paused and in October of 2016, she received word that her sarcoma had returned, and due to its size, radiation was not an option this time. With no other course of action to choose from, she had her left arm amputated just above the elbow within a month of diagnosis. As those around her came to her side to support her through this challenging time, Jane was often the one who would lift the spirits of her friends and family as she encouraged them with her positive outlook and her strength in the face of this adversity. She didn’t look at her missing limb and new way of adjusting to life as a setback but rather as a challenge which she accepted. Something that would make her stronger, more resourceful and more appreciative. Chris, as the handy man he is, built any and every gadget that would assist Jane in her day to day functions and she returned to her regular routine and their new normal in no time.

In late 2017 Jane was ready for her bionic arm and began the fitting process as well as the multiple sessions needed to learn how to operate in her new Robo Jane state. She was near the end of the program when it was discovered in January of 2018 that her cancer had come back for a 3rd time. This time in her lungs and pelvis and unfortunately it is inoperable, which means a very intense session of chemotherapy is the only possible course of treatment at this time.  Treatment has begun and Jane is undergoing a very intense level of chemotherapy which will take place over the next 9 weeks. After concluding the treatment, she will be reassessed in order to determine the next steps.

Jane continues to choose joy and hope over fear and she continues to be an inspiration to those around her.  She believes that she will again come out victorious in this crusade, but she doesn’t have to battle alone. Going through these challenges, and to give Jane the best care she needs and deserves comes with financial costs. Your donations will help lighten the burden for Chris and Jane to take care of things such as:
-immune booster medication
-holistic treatment and supplements
-diet modification to organic and vegan
-hospital parking
-income loss

We all want to do something for Jane and often feel helpless in how we can do that in times like these. This page was made so we can all make a difference and help. A lot of us giving what we are able can and will make a significant impact in this difficult time for Jane and her family, and is a small way to let her know how much she means to those whose lives she has impacted. Together let’s help Jane fight this battle.
