(CARE) Care About Restaurant Employees

Cooks Who Care wants to change the food industry culture. As experienced chefs and 300+ dedicated foodservice workers, we’re ready to launch a new standard for the food industry to live by, called CARE  (Care About Restaurant Employees).

It’s no secret that the food industry is an intense environment in which to work. Unhealthy lifestyles are the norm, and unhealthy habits are rampant. As the most employable workforce, we enlist in the well-known demanding schedules, late nights and weekends/holidays, the toll of lost relationships, the pressure of low wages with few benefits, often living paycheck to paycheck … because that’s the cost of pursuing the craft that we love and the drive to serve others.  It’s not a sustainable way of life. And it’s time for change.

When you support CARE you …

- Define what burnout looks like, recognize unhealthy habits, create proactive strategies.
- Cultivate a culture that prioritizes self-care practices at work and at home.
- Share wellness resources with others to increase access to local food, opportunities for fitness, stress relief and financial health services.
- Provide safer workplaces, highlight workplaces that celebrate diversity and ensure harassment will not be tolerated.

When you make a purchase from a CARE establishment or work for a CARE location, you’re supporting businesses with socially responsible work practices and demonstrating that you care about the well-being of the food community - the people who serve us all every day.

Our newly designed Wellness Program is a tool to inspire a new way of living for people who work in this industry that we love. Together we’re incentivizing health and wellness as operators, fellow co-workers, and consumers. Your donation helps us create an innovative ecosystem of support for foodservice members who feel isolated.  It’s time to be known for something new...because that’s what people who care do.

Maybe you’ve seen this dynamic in kitchens & restaurants you buy from?  Maybe you know someone who has faced these challenges? Maybe you’ve lived this life and know first hand how badly something needs to be done?

You can make a difference - even a $5 donation puts us closer to meeting our goal. See who else is helping the cause: http://bit.ly/About_CWC_Working_Wellness , then share the CWC Wellness message to get more people involved.

On why wellness is so important ... “I want cooks to learn early on that we all need to develop good habits in this hard working business. Taking on an exercise goal is a great long-term commitment for your career. Start a morning soccer team with fellow cooks 2 X a week. Or sign up for yoga or just go for a run a few times a week. It will make you feel better, look better and perform even better at work.”

Watch Elizabeth’s video about setting goals for yourself and then watch for her to share more fitness inspiration with Cooks Who Care!

She will be featured at our wellness pilot launch, June 4th at Green Soul Philadelphia and we're grateful so many people care about getting health back on everyone's list.

Karen Nicolas is no longer a working chef. Not because she doesn't want to. Because ignoring her health, led to developing an autoimmune disease, lupus.

Her life now....she must learn to deal w/ chronic pain, chronic fatigue, not to mention making adjustments in other day-to-day tasks. To add to the chaos, stress can induce flares for a time it made everything that much more complicated. But she found holistic health solutions and feels great.

Self-care is not selfish. Karen, learned that the hard way. But Cooks Who Care is actively outreaching to our food service community. We want to tell others, you are not alone.

Uptick your journey to renewed health. Get yourself back on your to-do-list and put your health first, not last. You’re worth it.
