Meet MD Gaziur Rahman (Gazi) who has been living and working in Gympie since 2013.

Gazi was born in Bangladesh and had to leave when it became unsafe for him to stay. He arrived in Australia and was processed in a detention centre and was granted a temporary work visa. He found work at Nolan’s meat works in Gympie in August 2013.

Gazi worked hard, found accommodation, and applied for a permanent residence visa. A year later while cycling home from work he was knocked off his bike and sustained serious leg injuries. Medical procedures rebuilt his leg and he was able to restart work at Nolan’s often sitting down to work.

Applications for permanent residency have been declined frequently and from the 4/1/17 his work visa was terminated. Nolan’s were reluctantly forced to terminate his employment stating that they wanted him to return when he had a visa.

Gazi now has no income and is unentitled to apply to Centrelink as he has no visa. He cannot apply for housing assistance due to as he is now deemed to be ‘illegal’. As an ‘illegal’ he is unable to have a Medicare or healthcare card to assist with medical treatment.

If our government refuses to help a member of our community the right to food and shelter we must look after ourselves.

This site has been set up to fund basic human needs – food and shelter. Other political avenues will be explored but right now Gazi needs the help of the community. Please donate whatever you can and spread the word that this is happening here in our community.

Let your local MP know this is not acceptable.

Thanks.

Please consider joining your voice to request a review of the visa application by Gazi, to allow him to stay, live and work in the community.

From the Border.gov.au website - and not from Yes Minister....The Minister does not intervene very often so you should not assume that the Minister will in your case. If the Minister does not intervene in your case, the Minister expects you to leave Australia when your current visa expires. To stay in Australia while your request is being considered, you must hold a visa. If you do not have a current visa, the Minister will not consider your case.

(ie if you want a Visa first make sure you have a visa...)
