Community Garden Terrace Walls (Gabions)

Help Prospect Farm build safe, long lasting retaining walls.
Because Prospect Farm is on a hill, the only way we can increase and preserve our growing space is through terracing: in other words, building walls that turn unusable, slanted ground into level growing space. Our current walls, however, are made of loose stone collected from around the farm, and many of these walls have crumbled and need to be rebuilt yearly. To preserve our paths and growing spaces, we want to replace our existing dry stone walls with gabion walls, making Prospect Farm safer, more accessible, and more productive.
What is a gabion?
A gabion is a resilient wall made by filling metal cages with stones and other material like gravel, dirt, or sand. Because of their sturdiness, they are often used in landscaping and civil engineering—you may have seen them on the sides of highways or in other large-scale applications. But they are also inexpensive and relatively simple to build, requiring only metal mesh, metal wire, and stone (much of which can be found). In this case, modest fundraising can do a lot to improve Prospect Farm’s infrastructure.
What is the plan?
We were able to build a small gabion as proof of concept out of found material, but we don’t have enough to reinforce the whole farm. The plan is to reinforce all of the frequently traversed areas of the garden, all of the terraced flower beds currently held with bamboo, and if we have enough material, the retaining wall supporting the fruit trees. While building the gabions, Prospect Farm will invite the public to join workshops to learn how to build gabions. We will source rubble and rocks from our own space and potentially from local construction sites.
What will your donation be used for?
Your donations will be used to fund this project. The wire needed to create strong gabions costs about $30 for each square foot. Your donations will be used to purchase the wire needed for the gabions. Your donations will also go to transporting found stones and rubble to Prospect Farm to fill the gabions. If we do not have enough found stone on the farm to use in the gabions, we will have to pay to transport leftover stone or other construction materials (from a location to be determined—let us know if you know anyone!).

Prospect Farm is a non-profit, cooperative project in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, that is working together to grow food in a formerly vacant lot, owned by Tom Angotti and Emma Matos. Our objective is diversity in food production and membership. We are slowly creating healthy soil through our community composting project and farm without chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.
