Comfortable in Conflict

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.”

― Norman Vincent Peale

Hello,

My name is Kibbs Fortilus and my life has been full of conflict - and I am grateful for them.

I was born in Port au Prince, Haiti and moved to America when I was four years old to escape the political turmoil. We moved to Springfield, Massachusetts. The paradise we were expecting to find in America was not found in the inner city. Through the guidance of teachers, counselors and mentors, I was able to avoid the drugs, gangs, violence, crime and cyclic poverty that has trapped a lot of my friends.

After high school, I attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. I participated and lead various discussions as a Multicultural Peer Educator, managed internal and peer related conflicts with first year students as a Resident Assistant, worked as a tutor in the nearby high school, and also worked as a substitute teacher during the school holidays. After college, I spent a year in India teaching and tutoring at the Centre for Tribal and Rural Development Trust in Tamil Nadu. After India, I worked as a dormhead at the Upward Bound Summer Academy. Then I moved to Germany. I worked as an English Instructor the first year I arrived until I was accepted into the Masters in European Societies at Freie Universität in 2015.

This summer, I want to spent 3  months in Switzerland  at the Institute for Peace & Dialogue, IPD, to improve my skills in conflict mediation. My interest in conflict mediation was sparked by talks from Brene Brown (The Power of Vulnerability) and William Ury (The Walk from No to Yes), and books such as "The Promise of Mediation: The Transformative Approach to Conflict" and "Comfortable With Uncertainty".

I want to improve my listening skills, my relationship with others, sensitivity to emotions, and learn how to leave a positive impact during and after having resolved a conflict.

There are three versions of this program.

There is a 10 Day Summer Academy for : 1,500

20 Day Summer Academy for : 3,600

And the one I am interested in includes both the 10 and 20 day program and an additional research component. This program runs for 90 days,  from August 11th to November 8th.

It costs : 6,700.

Accomodation, breakfast and dinner are all included.

I hope you will take the time to make a small donation. If you have any other questions, please check the website below :
