Black Veterans have been working to preserve Black Military History and disseminate information regarding our historic contributions in the defense of the nation.

We are seeking public support to fund our efforts to erect a statue of the legendary Buffalo Soldiers – Educator and Diplomat Colonel Charles Young in our Nation’s Capital. The Colonel was the highest ranking Black Officer in the United States Armed Forces during World War I. Colonel Young was medically discharged from the Army when the United States entered the War. To prove his fitness, he rode 497 miles from Wilberforce, Ohio to Washington DC on horseback. He was reinstated in the United States Army six days before the Armistice went into effect ending the War on November, 11th, 1918.

It has been a wide-held belief by many both past and present that the discharge carried the racial overtones of the Era. Paraphrasing Doctor W.E.B Dubois as written in the 1922 Edition of The Crisis Magazine, “Had Charles Young been allowed to serve in Europe he could not have been denied the stars of a General.”  There was no place in the segregated United States Army for a Black General in that Era of American History. The statue will

stand in recognition of the Colonel and his over three decades of honorable service, and the 400,000 Black Soldiers who served and distinguished themselves serving under the command of the French Army. The statue will be the first of a Black Army Officer mounted on horseback in our nation’s Capital.

The funding sought will allows us to pursue a public location for the statue in our Nation’s capital, with the necessary resources to follow through with the casting and mounting. (A bronze miniature of the statue in shown.)  The casting is designed by Master Sculptor Antonio Tobias Mendez.  Our fundraising goal is one and a half million dollars. Funds raised beyond our goal will be used to support other projects relevant to Black Military History.
