Eighty nine year old John Burton Snr of Liston has spent the best part of the last year building a replica Cobb & Co Coach from the ground up. John is a carpenter by Trade, a grazier by profession and is a very skilled mechanic and metal worker. In his repertoire of skills he is an excellent potter, leather worker and woodworker. He is an old timer who is able to turn his hand to anything, fix anything or make anything from scratch. He is a member of the Wheel Wrights Guild in the United Kingdom.

John has lived in Liston all of his life while working on the land. For a short period of time, in the early part of his life, John worked away building houses. He is a 4th generation Burton in the Liston area.

Liston is a small mountain village in northern New South Wales, Australia in the Tenterfield Shire local government area. It lies just inside the eastern boundary of the New South Wales, Queensland border on the old Cobb & Co route, now the Mount Lindesay Road, which once was a highway extending from Brisbane to Tenterfield, New South Wales.

John’s inspiration for the project was that he lives beside “The Severn Mile Lane” (now known as the Herding Yard Creek Road) and The Mount Lindesay Road on which was a main route for Cobb & Co to carry passengers in days past. It is John’s opinion that we must preserve our history in order to pass on to the generations to come. Too much history has been lost over the last 100 years and more.

John would like to display his Coach in the Park of Liston and create a small tourist attraction to remind us of our history and give tourists something spectacular to view in Liston. John has built his magnificent coach and now the Liston Hall Committee requires help and funding from others to achieve John’s goal. He hopes his works will be displayed in a first class facility that will protect his legacy and be a spot for people to enjoy.
