At least 100 Surrey residents were displaced after a massive fire tore through an apartment building late Saturday night on August 20, 2016. Our dear friend Vlad Nikic lost everything, all his identification and possessions (save for the pair of Air Jordan shorts he was wearing when he evacuated his home). He has given so much to our community, school, and students since he started teaching and coaching basketball at Delview 10 years ago. It's our turn to stand by our friend/teacher/coach and show him we've got his back during this terrible ordeal.

As Mr. Nikic's colleague and friend I want to thank everyone for the support and love you've shown him. When I started the campaign the funds were set at $5000, a sufficient amount a bunch of teachers collectively thought would help him get back on his feet quickly while he waits for news about his home and what was happening with his insurance. It was a surprise to see the outpouring of generosity from past and present students, parents, community members, colleagues, family, and friends. But then again, it wasn't really a surprise when I think about it because we all know what an amazing person Mr. Nikic is.

Mr. Nikic is beyond words of appreciation. You are the reason he's been able to find the energy to push through this challenging time. He told all of us at a staff meeting yesterday that you've all helped make him want to be a better person. Your words of encouragement were like little doses of positivity that came at just the right time each day.

I want to update you on what is happening to this GoFundMe page. Mr. Nikic has requested to stop the donations coming in from the page, it has gone beyond what he feels he deserves. I will be withdrawing the money and writing a check for him next week so he can make a few payments and purchase the items he needs that won't be replaced.

Once a Raider, always a Raider.

Thank you again,

Noah

Our friend Vlad was interviewed by CBC news yesterday. You can watch it here: http://www.cbc.ca/player/play/748944963851

The story begins at the 2:35 minute mark.

Mr. Nikic had just discovered this webpage moments before being on camera. He saw the outpouring of support all of you have given him. Not only in monetary funds, but also in your kind and sincere words from the heart. He's going to kill me for sharing this, but you may or may not have made him almost cry in front of the camera.

We love Vlad!

Delview Secondary will be taking donations as well in the form of gift cards and money. You can drop them off at the office during the weekday between 8:30am to 3:00pm. This strong outpouring of love and generosity for Mr. Nikic goes to show how much he has done for all of us. It's amazing to see so many people from the community step up during this challenging time.
