Solidarity with Mexican Teachers
Donation protected
The most recent wave of violent state repression against the Mexican teachers' union (CNTE) fighting for the future of public education calls for our full solidarity. Union leaders have been illegally jailed; protestors at Oaxaca's barricades have been murdered, wounded, and disappeared by federal police. These uprisings mark the 10-year anniversary of the popular movement that began as a teachers' strike and encampment that continues to inspire workers around the world.
As the UAW 2865, academic student-workers of the UC system, we passed a resolution in full support of the CNTE's demands. We have the chance to extend our solidarity even further and more concretely. CNTE leaders have requested monetary donations in order to produce and distribute their popular press - producing flyers, newspapers, and leaflets will allow membership to spread their message, mobilize, and build their movement at this incredibly critical time.
The union will match donations dollar-for-dollar. The $500 raised here can be doubled! I will coordinate the funds here and distribute to Omar Olivera Espinosa, a coordinator of the Center for Political and Trade Union Studies Section 22 of Oaxaca CNTE. In Omar's words: "It really is an urgency to have the written propaganda, even today we do not have materials to distribute in the demonstrations, practically everything is done digitally in social networks but we don't have a physical medium; that is helpful for generating consciousness and strengthening our struggle".
We too reject the top-down and corporate systems of evaluation and standardized testing that have proven to be failures in the United States, which pit schools districts, students, and teachers against each other in competition for ever- decreasing funding. We too know the strength that comes from being able to easily produce and distribute art, journalism, and organizing materials to membership and allies.
Your donation to fellow public education unionists will go an immensely long way to ensuring that the momentum of the Mexican teachers' movement will strengthen and grow.
Thank you!
