About three years ago my sister’s hands started shaking and her speech and cognitive skills slowed down.  After months of consulting doctors, about a year ago a neurologists suggested that her illness may be Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s.  She was then told that there is no cure and she should basically go home and wait to die.  Belize does not have the facilities/ technology needed to properly diagnosed or treat ASL or any other Neurodegenerative illnesses, so the doctor diagnosed her with ALS based on the symptoms she had.

Unwilling to give up and with the help of family and friends we started researching symptoms of her condition and found out that they are several other treatable illnesses that mimics the symptoms of ALS, and patients are often misdiagnosed.  This is great news of hope for us.   Because of the nature of her work, we do believe that she could have contracted a parasite or virus that is attacking her body.   She has been a Social Worker for the past eighteen years, and have had to work in unsanitary conditions for hurricane relief and even field work to help victims.  Because we know that she could have easily been bitten by an insect, mosquito, tick, spider, etc or could have contracted bacteria easily, we have all hope that she can be cured if she receives the right medical attention.

As well, two weeks ago she did a series of tests that revealed that she has non-viral Hepatitis and may have been living with it undetected for over 30 years.  The Hepatitis has now cause Cirrhosis of her Liver.

She was always an active and happy go lucky person who has served her country and community well.   She was a primary school teacher for several years before becoming a Human Development Officer, and was also the first female chairlady of her home village, she has been a major supporter of special needs children within Belize and is currently raising her eleven year old son who was born with Down’s Syndrome, we do not know if his condition is because of her illness.  She has also donated tremendously to less privilege families for food and schooling and she is known throughout the entire country of Belize for her generosity.

She is now about 90 percent paralyze and cannot care for herself, her sight is blurred and speech is almost inaudible. Despite the obstacles she remains positive that she will be well again and will be able to use her experience to help others in her position.  Always wearing a smile and thanking God daily that she has life and hope, she is asking for your help to assist her in going abroad to seek the proper diagnosis and possible treatment she needs.
