On September 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria forever changed the life of 3.5 million Puerto Ricans. On November 9th, I took a trip to Puerto Rico accompanied by Dr. Luther Harry Castillo and Dr. Pablo Valle, who lives in Puerto Rico.

Our visit included the municipalities of Cayey, Naguabo, and Vega Baja. We began in Cayey, a mountain town where there was a lack of quality drinking and portable water. The crops were devastated in the aftermath, which led to a loss of the town’s agriculture. Second, we toured the coastal area of Naguabo where we saw more than 700 homes without roofs. The residents were struggling to rebuild their homes due to lack of supplies. The most heartbreaking part of our visit was in the municipality of Vega Baja, which was one of the 15 most devastated areas in Puerto Rico. Escorted by the Mayor of Vega Baja, Marcos Cruz Molina, we visited a small community in ruins on the most northern part of the island. The majority of homes were lost while the remaining had only their floors left standing. Six families consisting of thirty-seven people, including twelve children, lived in wooden houses made from the debris of what Hurricane Maria left behind. They used salvaged nails and other materials they could find to patch together a place to sleep. In some homes, we saw at least five people sharing a single bed with the top and sides of the homes exposed to open wind and rain. They live day by day with absolutely no privacy.

It is very concerning that these areas have not been able to recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.  They are in need of quality portable drinking water and generators to help them in their efforts to rebuild their communities. I have set up a GoFundme account  in support of these specific areas in Puerto Rico because they are hard to reach and the recovery has been slow.  We are organizing a donation drive to buy or provide the following supplies:

Flashlights; Generators; Agricultural Seeds; Water filtered straws; Water filtered dispensers; Gift cards from Home Depot or Walmart.

We will deliver these items to a local nonprofit organization managed by Dr. Pablo Valle and his wife, Viviana Torres Mestey who will then distribute these supplies directly to the targeted areas. We appreciate your consideration and generosity, and we thank you for your support.

Happy Holidays,
