Clayton #8

Clayton was born 11/26/2005. He is passionate about baseball, #8 for his team the Albuquerque Baseball Academy. At the age of 9 he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, a congenital insulin deficiency. He learned very fast that in order to survive, he needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle, in addition to depending on insulin for the rest of his life. Two years later, at age 11, he developed a progressive weakness of his lower extremities. He was diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) or Peroneal muscular atrophy, a genetic neuropathy.

Clayton joined the ThunderHawks three months ago and fell in love with the CrossFit community. He loves to back squat and felt accomplished to be able jump rope again! In addition, Clayton is an ambassador of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and he is part of Make a Wish Foundation.

This summer, a new challenge for Clayton arose, an incidental 13 cm tumor on his lower back. Thankfully, the tumor was not cancerous! He underwent another major surgery and, after a few days developed a bowel obstruction, needing another surgery. Today, after 5 surgeries and constant medical supervision, he can now focus on recovery.

Clayton is definitely our hero, and will be one our featured athletes for long time. Although there is no cure for CMT, we are committed continue to support his functional ability to assist him with reaching his full potential. We decided to tell his story, and bring awareness about Type 1 DM and CMT, two incurable diseases, yet nothing is impossible.

Clayton is 4.0 in school and has big dreams. He comes to the box every time willing to give his best and not mind his limitations. He does this with a smile in his face and fire in his eyes. He has already inspired so many kids and adults around him, including us, in so many ways. We plan to use CrossFit Kids as a way to give him strength and encouragement as he fights through this challenging time. We are thrilled to be part of his journey!

These funds will help the Brack family to ease the medical bills and frequent trip expenses to Orlando and Philadelphia to meet CMT specialists.

We are calling everyone in the CrossFit kid and CrossFit community to join us in this fundraiser. Please share with family and friends. Lets create awareness about Type 1 Diabetes and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT).
