The Harvest for Humanity team has identified deserving women in Haiti to receive the first ever Women In Technology Educational Scholarships. These donations will provide them with the opportunity to reach their dreams.
We, several ladies who love to see women overcoming the odds to excel in STEM, were especially inspired when reading Clarisse's story. Her determination, at 19, to complete a high school education, apply for and receive an English language scholarship, and pass the state exam in Economics, is nothing short of remarkable — especially when you consider the odds she was up against.
Clarisse's parents, having limited resources, have chosen to educate her younger brother instead of her. So even in her own home she faces discrimination because of her gender, and she is determined to accomplish her goals despite this.
This situation is all too common. The high cost of schooling in Haiti means that boys frequently get priority for education, leaving girls to go it alone. We believe that a young woman like Clarisse will absolutely thrive when given a hand up.
