Eight years ago, my sister Claire, or Ri as we have nicknamed her, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I remember when we were younger, she would get awful headaches accompanied by violent vomiting. At the time, doctor's attributed it to a variety of things, she was put on a variety of treatments, but nothing seemed to work. Fast forward to the present, we now know why she was getting so sick and why the treatments didn't work.
My sister has seen dozens of specialists over the years, visited Georgetown, the National Institute of Health, Northwestern and her local doctor more times than I ever care to see a doctor in four lifetimes. She has been on four disease modifying drugs and endured 12-15 rounds of steroids. Despite the appointments and all of the treatments, she is considered to have Relapsing Remitting MS.
My sister can no longer drive, she is not able to walk more than a block and she cannot throw her body temperature too cold or too hot without it sending her MS symptoms into shock. She cannot carry more than a gallon of milk and living on the third floor of her building poses a daily challenge.
After all of this, she still has remarkable hope for herself and her family - her two smart and beautiful girls, Addy & Ava; her husband, Ryan - and for those who share this illness with her. If you are friends with her on Facebook, you know exactly what I mean. She is without a doubt the strongest person I have ever met, going through what she has and remaining the amazing mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend that she is.
There is a light for her and it is with Clinica Ruiz in Mexico beginning on June 24th. There, Claire will undergo chemotherapy and her stem cells will be removed and washed. She will receive shots to bring her bone marrow back up and then her cells will be returned to her body. The monetary goal, while rather large, covers airfare for Claire and our mother, treatment for Claire and apartment rental for the month that they will be down there. Claire will be without her daughters and without her husband for the entire month she is going through treatment.
