My dear friend Charles “Chuck” Spring fought terrorists and bad guys in defense of his country’s citizens for many years while in an Army uniform. Now a terrorist invader of another kind threatens the life of this former Infantry Officer dedicated to keeping us safe. While working tirelessly to keep abreast of a bad economy for his loved ones, as most of us must, Chuck was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer that has spread, sending little stealth terrorists to his liver, kidney, bladder, lymph nodes and elsewhere. But Chuck is a fighter of the first stripe. He got through his battle wounds and he knows he can beat this enemy with the help of his doctors and some help from us.
His first operation successfully removed the main cancer mass but now the long battle begins, including removal of affected liver and lymph node segments and massive chemotherapy.
Chuck, as do most like him, has a difficult time asking others for help or speaking about himself. He doesn’t want to burden others with his problems. But this fight is too big for him alone. The out of pocket costs after insurance are staggering. He needs a “Special Forces” team of us to help him defeat the enemy. Insurance and personal assets fall far short of the costs he now faces.
From the day I met Chuck in Iraq I sensed in him the qualities all of us would want our children to have as adults. He is a natural leader and yet completely approachable, witty and deep. Those are things one finds in our best and bravest.
Chuck has committed himself to beating these new invaders and then to dedicate himself to assisting his fellow military men, women and families injured and suffering from various war wounds. And, understandably, he wants to help his beloved grandkids grow up, learn and thrive. Please help him knock down this current foe so he can then help other military heroes and their families do the same.
