Technical knowledge is increasingly an essential key to success at school and work, yet not all UPES students have the same technology advantages at home.  For some, the only exposure to a computer is through a parent’s smartphone.  Upon arrival to middle school, students will be expected to be proficient with computers, specifically making Google Docs and Slides. Most of their assignments will be given and submitted through Google Classroom. Students who do not have access to computers in the home will be at a significant disadvantage to those who do.

The UPES PTA aims to provide a 1:1 ratio of Chromebooks to students in grades 3 to 6.  This will help to reduce the digital inequality by bringing more Chromebook computers into the classrooms, where they will serve as an important teaching tool.  Funds have already been raised to provide for 20 Chromebooks. This campaign will help the PTA raise funding for 10 more, so each classroom in grades three through six can have a Chromebook for every kid!

This is a direct fundraiser so your dollars go straight to purchasing Chromebooks for kids in the classroom. The UPES PTA is a 501c3 nonprofit educational organization, and all donations are tax-deductible.

Hear from two of our teachers about how they use computers in the classroom:

“The students in sixth grade use Chromebooks a lot for collaborating while researching and developing Google docs and slides,” said Dawna Phillips, a sixth grade Language Arts teacher at UPES. “It also benefits me because I post assignments in Google classroom.”

Geoff Favero, a fifth grade science and social studies teacher at UPES, uses Chromebooks as a teaching tool in his classroom. “Our curriculum has infused/integrated internet sites, which are great resources we can only utilize with access to technology. I also post assignments on Google classroom and Discovery Education as well. My students can do virtual labs—in Spanish, too—using Discovery Education through Chromebooks.”
