As many of you know, Christian Martin a Senior Basketball Player from Southwest Guilford High School, had a horrible fall during our semifinal State Championship Basketball game on March 9th. Christian has been hospitalized since and it is unknown when he will be discharged. While he is healing, his road to recovery will be long and require Our Financial Support. Please help this fine young gentleman and his family through this difficult time by offering your kind donation!

Hi Craig, Hope all is well. Another quick update: Saturday was the first time I heard Christian clearly ask for things as he was taken off the ventilator. He was quiet for several days after as his medications kept him pretty sedated, until today. The doctors cut his medications back and Christian had a pretty good day. We talked for about an hour and I tried to catch him up to speed. I was afraid to tell him that the championship was over because he has been mumbling about it while he has been in and out of sedation. When I told him it was over he said, I didn’t get to play? I told him no but they won, he asked what the score was. I told him 67-60 and he said, if I was there we would have won by 20! Christian was talking to an Intern and he told him he missed the championship, then Intern said but you got a ring, he said no I have 2 rings!! He said he couldn’t wait to see his friends and several other things when he was awake throughout the day. While he is still receiving medications that keep him somewhat sedated at times, you can see more and more of Christian every day! The neurologist said today was a good day but still a long road. She said in the next few days she would probably be able to give us an estimate for when he will be moved out of ICU and into the next phase of his rehabilitation and where and what that looks like for him.
Christian requested 5 Guys today and I made it happen, unfortunately, when I got back he was sound asleep. He did get to drink soda all day today, which was one of his first requests on Saturday. He did tell the speech therapist that coke was his favorite food! Again I can’t Thank everyone enough for your continued prayers and support!

From Christians mom, Christina: Christian is in and out of it. He came off of the ventilator yesterday. When I got there, He asked me for a quarter pounder and a coke. He asked where he was and what happened. He made a face when I told him that his sister was wearing his clothes. His short term memory isn’t there yet so every time he wakes up he is confused. He asks what happened and when you tell him he fell, he says “no I didn’t”. He did ask if they beat Cox Mill. He had a lot of sedation medication over the past week so it is still working it’s way out if his system. My hope is that we find a balance with medications that won’t require a ventilator so we can continue to make progress during recovery. Christian is very strong and we are reminded that with every episode that he has. Last night was a long night of reminders, him wanting to go home, him wanting to eat or drink. I stood 10 hours at his bedside and was reminded it would get better but it will be a very long process. This is not a race, it is a marathon is what one of the nurses said to me. There is a term for what he is going through right now and it’s called nuero storming which is very common after a brain injury. If you look it up, it summarizes what he is dealing with daily. I tried to let him watch the game last night, but I feel like he was getting more anxious. After it was over I turned it off and he said he had to go, I asked where he said “play basketball”. It made my day to see the shirts and the hands held up in honor of Christian. I want to thank everyone for their continued support and prayers for Christian and my family. I have lost track of who has done what because of the tremendous outpour of support. Please know that you are all appreciated!! #5strong

I am sharing this update from Christians mom Christina:
Christian still has a long road to recovery. At this time he is being tapered off sedation. It is likely that he will be in the hospital for at least a couple of more weeks. Possibility of inpatient rehab. Injury itself is slowly healing. He still needs a lot of rest, I know many are anxious to see him. When he is ready for visitors, I will let everyone know. I sincerely thank the SW community and everyone else that has donated and supported us. I am truly speechless at times about the outpouring of love and kindness that we have received. Many thanks from the very bottom of my heart. #5Strong
