Chris Holland memorial bench

$1,635 of $2,000 goal

Raised by 28 people in 6 months
Created July 18, 2018
Chris Holland, who I called "Dad," unexpectedly passed away on April 27, 2018 due to complications in heart surgery. With his passing, a large part of our hearts was suddenly empty. For those who were fortunate enough to call him friend or family, nothing will ever fill that void, but we can still remember him for the generous, kind, forgiving, humorous, and often mischievous man we came to love.

By donating to this cause, you're helping to build a bench in honor of his memory. The final location is still being determined, but the goal is to install it on publicly accessible land somewhere on the Cambria coastline. When the final location is determined, you will be notified on this website or via email if you've subscribed to alerts. The type of bench is also determined by where it can be installed. Ideally it would be custom made by the hands of Cambria locals and mine, but any CA State Park lands require specific materials and design if we go that route.

For those who are able to attend his celebration in Cambria on July 22nd, there will be a large poster to sign. This poster will be converted to a small plaque and affixed to the bench. In a way, we'll all be able to sit with him together, day and night, for the rest of our days. For anyone who isn't able to attend and still wants their signature on it, please contact me via the message button (a mail icon) to the right of my name on this page.

The final cost of the bench is still being determined, and is largely based on the chosen location, but any funds raised beyond the final cost will be donated to the Sons of the American Legion Post 432 in Cambria. For example, if the bench ends up costing $1200, $800 will go to the Sons. My Dad and I were both Sons, and I have a huge amount of gratitude for what they do for the community. And considering how much the Sons cook, I can't think of a better cause that my Dad would want to support.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support, in whatever capacity that is. Be kind and forgive.

All my love,
Josh

Hello everyone, happy holidays to you. It's been a while since the last update, so I just wanted to share progress on the bench so far.

The original dream goal was to build a custom bench somewhere publicly accessible along the Cambria coast. I've talked with many organizations, public and private, including representatives of the city, county, and state. In some areas, it's no longer possible to build a bench. In others, a significantly large donation is required, beyond what we raised and beyond what I can afford, unfortunately. I considered placing it on private property, but I felt that we should be able to visit the bench at any time we choose.

With all of that in consideration, the option that remains is to purchase a prebuilt bench (which includes a plaque with Chris's name) and install it in an area operated and approved by the state. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to engrave or affix everyone's signatures to the bench because of state regulations, but there are other possibilities for that. In the meantime, I'm continuing to pursue the state option and will have more to share after the holidays.

Thank you again for your support, and for your patience. Happy holidays, and all my love to you and your families.

Sunday was a very special day; we celebrated the life of Chris Holland. The support on Sunday and these last few days has been tremendous, and I just wanted to thank you all, tell you how grateful I am, and how much it means that so many of you loved my Dad and continue to support our family. It really is overwhelming and comforting at the same time.

For those who weren't able to attend the celebration on Sunday and would like your signature to be included on the permanent plaque that will be affixed to the bench, please contact me on the gofundme page via the message button (a mail icon) to the right of my name, via Facebook, or through other means.

Additionally, I've been slowly adding photos to the digital "Album of Chris." To join and see the photos, contribute, or even order a printed photo book, follow this link: https://cluster.co/i/59TBVJJC

Once again, thank you so much for the support. All our love~
