Choco's Recovery After Severe Dog Attack

Donation protected
On 11/27/2018 at 6:45 PM, my mom and I were walking my dog, Choco, in our neighborhood when a large dog escaped from the backyard through an opening in the fence and began to ferociously attacking my mini dachshund Choco. The dog dragged choco 20 feet across the pavement  and waved his body in the air as he was eating my dog. The owners of the dog did nothing to stop their dog. They just stood there and watched. After 4 minutes of this, I tried to intervene and the dog bit my right hand. The attacker then dragged my dog to the front of the owner's house and that is when the owner finally removed the dog. We had 6 people come and help care for Choco who all heard the attack from their homes.

Choco was taken to the emergency vet bleeding profusely and in so much pain. He has extensive trauma throughout his entire back, beginning at the shoulder and ending at the pelvis. He also has trauma in his abdomen and chest. We elected for emergency surgery to help clean the wounds and he is currently fighting a severe infection with a fever.

I also had to go to the ER to treat my wounds. I'm okay and will be okay. I was given antibiotics and awaiting animal control to quarantine the dog to see if I need rabies treatment.

What makes this a million times harder on us is that the owners of the dog will not return our calls or messages. I know a neighbor who witnessed them put the dog in the car and take him somewhere else after we left. We called the police and I gave them my statement and they tried to knock on the door of the dog owner's house and they turned their lights off and ignored the police. They did not provide rabies paperwork to the police, which is now a health risk to my life.

This is a very tragic event. My family just lost a dog 3 weeks ago due to a sudden spinal injury and these costs are too much for us to afford. We have to hire legal counsel, which also comes with high costs. We would like to handle this in a civil manner but what happened and how everything is playing out is not okay. The vet bills are so far $7,000 and counting, as my dog will require an extensive hospital stay in the ICU and additional surgeries because of how extensive the trauma was. Not only that, but my mom and I are experiencing a lot of anxiety attacks and trauma from this. We love our dogs more than anything and this feels like a horrible nightmare. If you could please help out it would mean the world to my family. Choco really needs your help and we want to prevent this from happening again.

Much love and thank you,
