China Study Abroad-Swine Production

Donation protected
My name is Vanessa Vernon of Eldon, Missouri. I am the daughter of Steve Vernon and Nannette Nicole Vernon (Pevoto). I am a Senior and Animal Science Major at the University of Missouri.

My dream has always been to be a veterinarian. To further this goal, I work at the University of Missouri’s Comparative Neurology Lab with a colony of dachshunds to combat Batten’s disease (a neurodegenerative children’s disease). I am the secretary for the Pre-Veterinary Medical Club and a member of Block and Bridle Club through the University. I do volunteer work outside the University with Puppies with Purpose, where I work as a Raiser. As a Puppies with Purpose raiser, I socialize and potty train a perspective service dog. He spends the majority of his time with me and goes with me everywhere possible. When I go out in the public, I use it as an opportunity to educate people on what a service dog actually is and how to make a disability friendly community.

I work, participate in extracurricular activities, do volunteer work regularly, and am a full-time student. I have recently been accepted to study abroad in China for Swine Production. There are many reasons I would like to partake in his life-changing program. One reason is for the academic credit. I would get three credits in International Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources that could be applied to my degree. Another reason is to make me a more competitive candidate for veterinary school. The University of Missouri Veterinary School is extremely difficult to be accepted to. I would also gain insight into one of the largest international markets on the planet and learn more about one of the species studied in veterinary school. This is an experience that not everyone would be fortunate enough to have. Another reason is because if I get into veterinary school, this might be one of my only times in my life to travel abroad and experience another culture. And the final reason is because of the time-frame. This is one of the smaller programs that lasts a week, so I could get back and continue my various work and studies.

However, because of the shorter time frame, there are less scholarships available. Many of the scholarships I was going to apply to are for three-week or longer programs. I am still applying to some scholarships, but it won’t cover the full cost. If you are willing to donate it would be greatly appreciated and would not go to waste. I am hoping to raise approximately $4,500. This would cover the cost of airfare, the tuition part of study abroad, and my Visa/Passport. I have until January 15th, 2019 to raise the funds. I would be truly grateful for any help you feel you are able to offer. This is extremely important to me.

Please share this with your family and friends to give me a better opportunity to obtain this career and life goal. Thank you for your time, Vanessa Vernon
