Children's Relief Ministry, Liberia

Beschermde donatie
The 40 children living at Children's Relief Ministry (CRM) in Paynesville, Liberia range in age from 4 to 20 and come from all over the country. Most of the children at CRM were orphaned when one or both of their parents died - either as a result of the 20 year civil war that plagued Liberia up until early 2000, due to the more recent Ebola outbreak, or for a host of other reasons in this country that ranks in the top 10 poorest countries in the world in most international buisiness and development agency reports.

CRM was founded in 1994 by Sam and Isabel Kargbo in their efforts to care for children who were affected by the war. Since that time, the Kargbo family has cared for and sheltered hundreds of children, through another civil war, ebola, and otherwise harsh conditions. About 7 years ago, Sam donated his family property to construct a permanent home for the orphanage and since then has also built a school on site (Zion Praise Academy) in order to assure that all of the children living at CRM are able to attend school.

CRM is in need of help. We have three projects that we are asking for help with, and if you would like to know who the we of the project is, we are members of the Advisory Board of Directors:  Rabih Kashouh, Christopher Greene, Catie Dupont, Anne Geroski, and Sam Kargbo.

1. Meet Sundaygar. He is one of 40 children living at the Children's Relief Ministry (CRM) located in Paynesville, Liberia. You may have seen the story about Sundaygar's wish for a new leg that was featured in NPR's Goats and Soda web blog: http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2017/02/19/514534638/top-items-on-this-12-year-olds-wish-list-a-leg-a-bicycleMeet Sundaygar. 2. CRM is in the process of upgrading its dormitories. The dormitory building sits on one side of the CRM compound and houses all of the children who live on campus. It has a front porch and the entire building is divided into two sides: one for girls and one for boys. Each side is divided into two rooms –one for the younger children (girls or boys) and one for the older ones. Solar panels were just installed in the building -thanks to a local NGO called PartnerLiberia working in collaboration with US based Pinkering Energy Solutions, providing electricity for the dormitory. But the beds are in need of repair, the concrete floor needs to be re-surfaced and tiled, the closets and porch finished, the rooms painted, and screens are needed to keep out the malaria mosquitos. We call this the Dormitory Project.  Update as of June 2017.  This project has been completed thanks to generous donations from donors through the GoFundMe campaign, organized fundraisers being held in Liberia, and a donation made by the Michigan National Guard, and so much hard work by the Marine Security Guards assigned to the U.S. Embassy.  They really are amazing!

3. The final project we are seeking assistance for is to upgrade the dining hall/kitchen at the orphanage. This one story mulit-use building is the current heart and soul of the compound.  The space is used for preparing and enjoying food, holding informal meetings, watching movies when volunteers bring movies to share.  This building houses the administrative office for the orphanage and school.  It also houses a "medical unit" where the children of the orphanage can receive basic health care and rest if they need to be in a quiet space when feeling ill (this is a new, fully funded program). The proposed upgrade involves adding a second floor to this building.  The second floor will house a computer lab (computers have been donated) , a science lab (a necessary component for graduation from High School for the 2017-2018 school year), the library (books have already been generously donated), and a small apartment which would allow the Director, Moses, to live on the compoudn.  One of the interesting parts of this proposed project is that the school's Parent Teacher Association has pledged $1000 USD for this project.  That is pretty remarkable as most Liberian families are living on less than $100 USD a month.  The estimated expenses for this project are $7500 USD, so we still need to raise $6500 USD.  We call this the Dining Room and Kitchen Project.

CRM is currently being managed by Sam and his son, Moses, with support from Peace Corps Response Volunteer, Anne Geroski, and an Advisory Board that includes a number of Liberian host nationals and ex-pats working and living in Liberia.   The Advisory Board works closely with Sam and Moses to monitor funds and plan future projects.

For more detailed information on these latter two projects, please email us at: [e-mail geredigeerd]. All money donated for these projects will be used immediately for the expenses outlined in the respective projects.

Monies donated are being administered by Catie Dupont, who is an American, working at the U.S. Embassy and living in Monrovia.

If you are able and willing to contribute to any of these projects we would be most grateful. You can earmark your money for a particular project if you want (send us an email at the above email address to let us know which project you are supporting) and we direct those funds accordingly. We will also post updates on all of the projects via the Zion Praise Academy - Children Relief Ministry Paynesville, Liberia facebook page (https://web.facebook.com/Zionpraiseacademy/?ref=bookmarks).

On behalf of all of the children and staff of CRM, thank you for your support in these projects. Every drop in the bucket is how the bucket gets filled!

Thanks.
CRM staff and CRM Advisory Board

The Advisory board is comprised of both Liberian and Expat members who work, hand in hand, with the CRM staff to develop and implement programs.
