Support Chicago Street Medicine!
Chicago Street Medicine (CSM) , is a new nonprofit with chapters at medical schools throughout the city. Our goal is to develop a student-fueled, inter-professional and interdisciplinary project to improve the health of those experiencing unsheltered homelessness through service, education, research, and advocacy.
Health care for the homeless presents a problem on multiple levels, from political to financial to humanitarian, and efforts to deal with these problems are desperately needed. Our solution is to serve people where they are, physically, mentally, and emotionally - "On their terms and on their turf." We will work until the 32-year disparity in life expectancy between the chronically homeless and the general US population no longer exists. We will work until the homeless no longer feel marginalized or stigmatized by the healthcare system. We will work until our city is healthy.
We are currently in the process of finalizing our 501c status which will allow for tax-deductible donations. However, getting 501c status is timely - up to 6 months - and costly – up to $1500. While we’re waiting on our official non-for profit status, our costs continue to add up- medical and survival supplies, technology, even downtown parking.
Your donations will sustain us through the 501c3 process and will enable us to continue operations and expansion. We hope that you will join us- together, we can help heal our city.
As we gain experience, we are able to reassess our needs. One of our largest overhead costs is the purchase of wound care supplies. You can help by purchase a wound care kit - just $7.70. The kit contains alcohol wipes, Neosporin, sterile 4x4 gauze pads, bandaids, and ace bandages to help our patients keep their wounds clean to promote healthy wound healing.
