The Cheltenham Badlands are home to rolling hills of Queenston Shale that are over 400 million years old. This unique topography runs along Olde Base Line Road, and has seen increased tourism since 2000, when the land was purchased to be held in trust for the people of Ontario.

As the site has grown in popularity, often welcoming in excess of 1,000 visitors per weekend, various concerns have been identified, including traffic safety, parking, geological protection, and management of the site in general. In addition, foot traffic on this natural landmark has caused permanent devastation amounting to over 3 metres of erosion of the soft red clay soil — this is at a rate of TEN times the natural process!

In the spring of 2014, the Niagara Escarpment Commission approved the construction of a parking lot on this very fragile site. No plan for preserving or protecting the Badlands was included in this announcement. Public consultation during the planning process was mandated, yet was ignored. The only avenue for public discussion was to file an appeal.

We are currently in the formal hearing process with the Niagara Escarpment Commission Hearing Office. As “Friends of the Badlands”, we are trying to raise funds to support the costs of retaining legal representation. Your generous contribution will go towards protecting this jewel in our community. Please help us to preserve this unique Area of Natural and Scientific Interest. Together we can save the Badlands!

Well we are on our way! The message is getting out there and people who really care about preserving the Cheltenham Badlands are coming forward to support us. Imagine wanting to build a parking lot on an ANSI (Area of Natural and Scientific Interest)!! Imagine that due mainly to human impact this jewel in our neighbourhood has already been eroded over 3 metres!! That's higher than most ceilings!! Think about it! In order to construct this parking lot, tons of fill has to be brought in and then the plan is to pave it! There are no plans in place to preserve this site nor has adequate research been done to consider alternate sites to accomodate the visitors.
The parking lot is to be on the south side of Olde Base Line Road just east of the open area we all see. It will have one entrance/exit which is to be 4 seconds just below the highest hill! 4 seconds, if you are going 40 km! We are just waiting for a catastrophe! And guess what, it will probably be one of us or ours!! Those of you who travel this road know how dangerous it is at the best of times! Olde Base Line Road is the only direct, assumed, passable road. In case of an emergency and if it is I'm peded in any way the emergency service to all those who live above the Escarpment is at risk!
We appreciate the support of those who have stepped up! We appreciate your courage, those who step forward are always ahead!! Thank you, and please spread the message far and wide! The Badlands cannot speak, we are their voice!!
