Providing neurological patients the opportunity to enhance their quality of life at Chelsey Park Health & Rehabilitation

I want you to imagine the unthinkable. You wake up tomorrow unable to get out of bed you can no longer walk to the window, open the door or even say good morning. While your mind remains intact, you cannot communicate.

For those who have never experienced a progressive neurodegenerative disease, such as ALS or MS, it’s hard to imagine a life where even simple tasks become increasingly difficult if not impossible to do. Unfortunately, this is the reality for thousands of Americans.

As the disease progresses, the body breaks down, but the mind often remains alert. One by one, muscle groups and muscular function fails, taking away ones freedom, and ultimately, life.

With access to innovative technology and specialized care, people fighting back against neurological diseases and cerebrovascular accidents have a chance to regain a little of their independence and an improved quality of life.

This powerful combination of technology and care is available at Chelsey Park Health & Rehabilitation (Chelsey Park) in Dahlonega, Georgia.

Chelsey Park is the only skilled neurological nursing center in Georgia, and one of only three in the United States, to offer Promixis Environment Automation Controller (PEAC)- technology equipped rooms. The center is designed to provide specialized care for patients with a wide range of neurological diagnoses, including Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s, MS, muscular dystrophy, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), stroke recovery and other neurological diagnosis.

The server-based PEAC technology gives a patient control of his or her environment through a computer screen mounted on a power wheelchair. The individual uses mouse, head-tracking, voice-activated or
eye-tracking commands to open doors, turn on a TV or summon an elevator, allowing him or her to regain some of the independence lost to the disease or trauma.

We’re reaching out today to ask for your help. Community Health Foundation, a not-for-profit 501c(3) organization has set a goal to purchase Eyegaze software, computer tablets and power chairs for the 13 PEAC-technology-equipped rooms at Chelsey Park. All donations collected will go directly to the center for the purchase of Eyegaze software, computer tablets, power wheelchairs and ongoing costs associated with patient clinical care.

Thousands of people across the country—and hundreds throughout Georgia—need access to this technology. Unfortunately, the cost of the tablet and power wheelchair is greater than most patients at Chelsey Park can afford to pay on their own. Your donation will help neurological patients at Chelsey Park benefit from this technology and specialized care. Visit http://www.chelseyparkhealth.org/peac.html to understand how much your support will mean to neurological patients and their families at Chelsey Park Health & Rehabilitation.

Please contribute what you can and together, we can help patients live their lives with more dignity, independence and an enhanced quality of life.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of neurological patients at Chelsey Park Health & Rehabilitation.
