Chelsea's Iris Melanoma Fight

On October 12, 2018 Chelsea was diagnosed with Iris Melanoma, cancer of the iris, an extremely rare condition. Her doctor is recommending that she undergoes Plaque Brachytherapy as soon as possible (within the next 4 weeks) to treat the cancer and to prevent it from spreading to other parts of her body, Unfortunately, health insurance does not cover the costs of the surgery and it is very expensive. We are asking for help, please.   About her diagnosis: Chelsea has had a freckle, also known as a nevus, in her left eye since she was a child. Sometimes, a nevus can become malignant and spread to other parts of the body if not treated in time. Thankfully, Chelsea’s optician noticed the spot at her annual eye exam and recommended she go see a specialist.  We traveled to New York City to see an expert in the field. Among all uveal tumors, iris melanomas has the best prognosis, with the mortality being 2-3% in cases with metastasis.  We are hoping and believing for a successful surgery, a speedy recovery, and complete restoration of her eye and life. About her treatment: Plaque brachytherapy is the most widely used treatment for choroidal melanoma and delivers a highly concentrated radiation dose to the tumor (with relatively less radiation to surrounding healthy tissues). The radioactive plaque can also be called a “radiation implant” or “radioactive source.”  The dose of radiation delivered to the tumor is determined by the type, number and strength of the radioactive seeds used and length of time of the implant. The dose will also depend on the size of the tumor and its location. Placement of the plaque is performed in the operating room. During the procedure, the eye cancer specialists will attach the plaque to the wall of the eye, covering the base of the intraocular tumor. The plaque will stay on the eye for 5-7 days and then be removed in a second surgery.    https://eyecancer.com/eye-cancer/treatments/eye-and-vision-sparing-radiation-therapy-for-intraocular-tumors/  ***************************************************************************** Obviously, the diagnosis has taken a toll emotionally, mentally and financially. We would really appreciate support from Friends and Family if you are able.  Please know that anything helps.
