Put it in Drive for Darius

$1,225 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 15 people in 19 months
Created June 21, 2017
Last December a teenager named Darius came to my door to sell a variety of products.  I asked what he was raising money for and he replied "to pay for college".  When I asked what he hoped to do when he got out of college he said "I want to be a chef".  As an employee of Johnson & Wales I felt that God had put me in Darius' path.  His story is similar to others who come from poverty:  being raised by his grandmother along with two sisters (one older and one younger), dealing with financial, educational and social issues.

Amy & I have joined with Sally Hawk to help lift this family out of poverty and to help Darius realize his dream of college and of becoming a chef.

He has a 1 year old sister, Dalasia, that we hope will one day have big dreams as well.  We currently have her enrolled in a day care program so that their grandmother (guardian) can go to school and to work.  We are raising funds to help with auto repairs, insurance and day care.

Nobody has to do everything but if everyone does something we can make a difference for this family and their future generations.

We thank you for your consideration in supporting this campaign.

Darius has been living with us since February-providing him with a safe and stable environment. His schedule is quite busy with school, work, tutoring and karate. A neighbor/friend of ours has taken in his older sister, Daisia, so he has family nearby. He will attend a one week culinary camp at JWU this summer. Thank you for being a partner with us.

Amy & I continue our mission to help a family break the cycle of poverty and put the children in a position to achieve their dreams. In a study released two years ago, Charlotte ranked 50th out of 50 cities in upward mobility. We took it as a personal challenge to make a difference - one family at a time. We will make an effort over the holidays to increase our reach and expand our network to gain financial support for day care for the baby so others can go to school and work. We thank you for your support and for helping us in this mission.

We have received rebuilt a transmission in a donated 1999 Lexus SUV. Your contributions were matched by Sally and me and we delivered the vehicle to the family last week. We will continue to promote the campaign and put the funds toward insurance or gas.

We thank you for your participation in helping to lift this family out of poverty. Still a long way to go but on the right path.

Thank you to our early donors who have brought us to nearly 20% of our goal. We are currently working with a local auto repair to help rebuild a transmission for a donated 1999 Lexus SUV that we believe still has a lot of miles in it. Projected cost is $2500-$2800. Our campaign is critical to providing transportation to the family. Please share with others who might consider supporting.
