Help Me Fight Colon Cancer

My story is both typical and unique, about me and about millions of young adults suffering from colon cancer who don't even know it. Your donation will help pay for much needed colon cancer prevention and care.

My Battle with Colon Cancer

When I first started to have symptoms in early 2016, the possibility of me having colon cancer did not cross my mind. I was a young 42 year old African American woman. We don't get colon cancer.

Still, the pain in my stomach got worse and worse, along with other symptoms such as constipation and weight loss. It finally got so bad that I had to get help.

I visited my primary care physician's office over 15 times in June 2016  and the emergency room more than 10 times with excruciating pain. I was told that I had an ulcer, diverticulitus and more, and each time I had to push them to keep trying to find the correct diagnosis. Finally, and much to my physican's surprise, they found the true cause of my pain and suffering: colon cancer.

Soon, I had surgery. The original plan was to take a laproscopic approach to remove the cancerous mass. However, the tumor was so large they had to use a different method. Two blood transfusions, an around the clock morphine drip and much discomfort later, the tumor was removed.

Just when I was thought I was starting my recovery, one week after surgery, my tests showed that the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes. Now, my recovery includes aggressive radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

I am asking for your help to fund my surgery and treatments because the costs are huge and getting larger. So, please help me pay these bills. Whatever you can give will be appreciated. Everything helps.

Our Battle with Colon Cancer

In addition to my own personal journey, I now advocate for the importance of cancer prevention screenings for young adults. While a lot of policies and programs support older Americans as they deal with cancer prevention and care, folks under the age of 50 have much fewer resources. Because of this, colon cancer disproportionately affects younger adults, in part, because they can be misdiagnosed...like I was. Education, knowing your family history and proper resources can help stave off some of the mortality rates caused by colon cancer, especially in disadvantaged communities.

To help others affected by colon cancer, I pledge to dedicated donations to cancer prevention and treatment. Join me to make a difference on this important issue!

I am excited to announce that I have partnered with the NBA's Brooklyn Nets Foundation for a fundraising event scheduled this Fall. Proceeds from ticket sales will also help kids in NYC attend NBA games and get support.

Thank you for your support!
