Char's Brain Surgery & Dad's Death

Our family has been plagued with heartache once again. Charlotte just lost her father, Waco Cross. He was a wonderful man, husband, father, friend and teacher in the Hutchinson-Nickerson community. Three months ago, Charlotte had an extensive surgery to remove half her brain because of Rasmussen's encephalitis. This illness is a very rare inflammatory neurological disease, causing Charlotte to have severe seizures, loss of motor skills and speech, hemiparesis (paralysis on the right side of her body), chronic encephalitis (inflammation of her brain), and erratic behavior. Charlotte is now 10 years old and we have been dealing with this illness all these years! She has been hospitalized many times, one of them she almost lost her life because of long lasting epilepsy during the night. She was put on a ventilator to keep her alive. Doctors tried different kinds of anti-seizure medications and a VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulator) device with no success. Besides 24/7 care and multiple medical appointments it’s devastating to see her progressive deterioration and not be able to stop her seizures. But even more painful is to see Charlotte not enjoying her childhood because of limited physical movement, cognitive impairment and frequent meltdowns that affects not only her but my emotional health. Charlotte lost her right field vision after surgery. All these issues mentioned are irreversible and I will live with them for a lifetime. Please help us to go through this devastating time.
