Ford the Creek for Charley & Susan

$2,625 of $5,000 goal

On Friday May 18, 2018 after a week of rain, the banks of Anthony Creek overflowed, washed away our bridge and everything in its' path.

No one around here remembers a time when the water has ever been that high. The ground was saturated from a weeks worth of rain. The water had no where to go.

At its' normal level, the creek is ankle to knee deep. Our bridge was 12 feet high with concrete bulkheads and steel beams.

We were stranded for 3 days waiting for the water to recede enough for us to wade across to the other side to a borrowed car parked on the other side.

The following Thursday the Caldwell County Emergency Service and the US Forestry Service came and built us a foot bridge. Yay! We are so grateful to them. It's made life so much easier.

While our ultimate goal is to re-build the bridge we lost, that is months away (and estimated to cost $60,000).

We feel our next step is to re-build the ford so that we can drive to and fro across the creek.

For materials, equipment and labor it is estimated to cost $3000 - 5000.

We hope to get started after the rains (yes, more rain!) are predicted to stop at the end of this week.

We are asking that you please consider sharing and/or donating to our GoFundMe. Your gift to help us with this task would be very much appreicated, Thank You.

Not much is going on here right now. In between work, cleaning up debris and waiting on notification from the state of North Carolina we have been talking about our options for a new bridge. Help or no help from the state, we'll have to do something. We may have to go back to the old locust log bridge we had before this one that washed away.
Here's a photo. I liked that bridge. It had character.

Yesterday I spoke with the folks at the county emergency services. They are compiling a list of everyone that had property damage. They will submit it to the state to see if we can get some help. I'll post an update when we know anything.

Many thanks to those who have donated, shared and helped in other ways. Let's send out some good vibes to persuade the decision makers be generous!

In the meantime, I thought you'd like to see what things used to look like.

So, it's been 3 weeks since the flood took our bridge away. Since then the county and forest service built us a foot bridge. We have been using it to get to our cars on the other side of the creek.
Now the creek has receded enough to work on the ford. Charley has been working hard on it and yesterday I was able to drive my Outback up to the house!
The ford still needs some tweaking but I should not have to take groceries up to the house with the riding mower anymore!
Unless the creek rises, then it's back to parking on the other side of the creek.
But for now, yay!
