Charlie Shaffer's Recovery Fund

Donation protected
This is Siobhan, Charlie Shaffer's daughter (posting with my wonderful husband's Facebook). If you do not know already, my dad was involved in a terrible accident on Sunday. He was hit by a car while riding his road bike, an activity that he loves to partake in (and write about on Facebook) every weekend. As far as I know, we are not aware of who the driver was or exactly how he was hit.

Amazingly, he was transported to the hospital and had to be identified by an incredible friend of his.

Unfortunately, Charlie landed on his head and has suffered a traumatic head injury from the crash. He has a fractured skull as well as a broken neck. Our family was just informed that he has a C6 and C7 vertebrae spinal cord injury. He also has numerous fractures in his arms and a large laceration on his head. He will undergo a series of surgeries to repair damage to his neck, spine, and head.

No matter what the prognosis is, my dad has a long road to recovery ahead of him. If you know him well, you know that my dad would never ask for help - he has spent many years giving his life to others. My dad is a Child Advocate for the State of West Virginia. I have jokingly heard him call himself "the protector of the babies". Now, I feel that it is our time to protect him. Charlie brings love, joy, and hope to everyone that he meets. Whether he is winning hearts at the Rec Center or singing proudly with the chorus, he is always a beacon of light to others.

His road ahead will consist of a great deal of therapy, rehabilitation, and care. Of course, we do not know what the numbers will look like, but we do know that financial responsibility will rest on his shoulders. I have created this fund to help alleviate that burden in any way possible. Anything that you can contribute is vital - it all will help him and our family. What I can also say is that if you cannot give, Dad would appreciate your hope, prayers, and love thrown his way. He would also appreciate it if you sang a glorious song or two for him (as he often does for us).

I will post updates as I can. I am flying to Morgantown today and will post a photo and update of my dad as soon as I have it. Please feel free to contact me or our family members who are involved if you have any questions.
