Charles House - Trainee Challenge

Our Charity:
Charles House is a young people’s home owned by the Birmingham Children’s Trust located in the South of the city. The home provides a service for children throughout Birmingham who have a statement of special education needs and attend special schools, many of which also have some form of sensory disorder.

Described as the glue that holds families together, Charles House offers respite care (short breaks) for young people and relief for their families and carers. The time these children spend at Charles House helps them move forward with their disability in a safe and loving environment.

Recently, Ofsted completed an inspection on Charles House and in their report described the building as shabby. In addition to this, due to extensive budget cuts across Birmingham City Council, the home was faced with the possibility of closure in 2017. Following a city-wide petition and attention from a number of local media outlets and Councillors, Charles House was saved and continues to operate under the Children's Trust.

Our Project:
In light of all the great work the Birmingham Children's Trust and the team at Charles House do and following the recent struggles that have affected the home, Charles House has been chosen as the Fortem Management Trainee Legacy Project for 2018.

Fortem are currently undertaking work to renovate previously unused areas of Charles House and create more spaces and possibilities for the young people and families that use the service.

The rear garden has been out of action for a number of months due to issues with the paving which has been caused by the roots of the trees in the garden. Fortem will be transforming the existing area into a sensory garden – a place where the children can go and play and be proud of.

Most of the children at Charles House don’t often get a chance at independence as many require care 24 hours a day. Both Fortem and the management team at Charles House feel the children would benefit from opportunities to learn about and perform basic day to day chores in a household.

In light of this, Fortem are also looking to transform the current storage area into an independent living facility. This would be an area where the children can cook, make drinks, and generally be on their own and relax with an integrated lounge area.

Donations:
All of the money raised through Go Fund Me donations will be passed on to Charles House to contribute towards the equipment and white goods required for the independent living facility, that haven't already been donated.

If you feel there are other ways in which you can support our project, including the donation of time, skills, materials or equipment please get in touch and email the team on [email editado].uk.

This project will have a huge impact on everyone involved with Charles House and will leave a Fortem legacy for years to come so please donate generously and enable this vision to come to life.
