Support Epilepsy Research and Care in Memory of Thomas Sims
My friend, Thomas Sims, died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at the age of 29, due to complications from a seizure disorder. Thomas leaves behind his children, Otto and Maeve; his wife, Ashton; and a long list of family and friends. With the blessing of Thomas's family, I am organizing a fundraiser for the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas. Your donations will help support vital medical care, research, and resources for families affected by seizure disorders.
Thomas was a man of uncommon intellect and deep faith. His broad interests ranged from Byzantine history to Kantian philosophy to Lord of the Rings canon. Even after his seizures grew more frequent, Thomas’s mind remained a reservoir of funny witticisms and famous historical quotations.
A gifted conversationalist, Thomas put his mind to use exploring the beliefs and ideas of everyone he encountered. He had a remarkable ability to ask questions that cut to the heart of an idea and helped people examine the world in a new way.
Naturally then, Thomas studied in philosophy at Stephen F. Austin University, where he founded a philosophy discussion group and published poetry as a hobby. Within philosophy, he was particularly drawn to thinkers who emphasized the duties we owe to each other in virtue of belonging to a common community. This philosophical foundation shaped his approach to life and relationships. He treated those he encountered with unmatched dedication and quietly performed acts of kindness out of a sense of obligation, without expectation of reward. He brought this same intensity and care to fatherhood, taking particular delight in contributing to the moral and spiritual upbringing of Otto and Maeve.
In our last conversation, Thomas shared a prayer that came to him during one of his hospital visits. He told me he tried to say this prayer whenever he passed by a hospital.
Lord Father, please guide and aid the physicians.
Lord Christ, have mercy on the patients and victims.
Spirit, please comfort all those who suffer.
We miss you, buddy. Pray for us in the Kingdom. IC XC NIKA.
